Why does Chinese authority take down the social group while using their discourse in their own propaganda system? In this paper,I argue that using propaganda with subculture discourse is for counter foreign criticism. With the rise of "information globalization" and "global informatization",political communication is not only related to domestic public opinion, but also closely related to international publicity and public diplomacy.Under such circumstances, the threat of national political security is closely related to the ideological conflict and impact brought by informatization.External negative information will not only affect the country’s international image, but also provide domestic people with information resources to question their governance ability. How to resolve the information crisis and better guide public participation is particularly important for the way of political publicity to keep pace with the times.Based on the theory of political communication,I aim to explore the reason and effectiveness of using subculture discourse in political publicity in China in the era of information globalization. The effects of which have two competing theories to explain. The “cooptation” proposition argues that subculture discourse works as a discourse resource to co-opt the young generation to increase their support for the regime. The “mobilization” proposition argues that the regime can use subculture discourse in counter-foreign-criticism via mobilizing internet users to make comments in favor of the regime.I first explore the process of the politicization of fandom through case study, and then test the theories by conducting a survey experiment including over 2800 respondents. The results provide evidence supporting the cooptation proposition.I found that reading propaganda with subculture discourse can strengthen pro-regime attitudes by emotional mechanisms. However,it cannot increase pro-regime behavior. What determines mobilization is the foreign challenged events and criticism.
