The arrest of Huawei’s CFO in Canada at the request of the USA included critical discourse on the biases of the media in reporting information related to China. The research aimed at exposing the anti-China perspectives evidenced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation(CBC)covering the arrest of Meng.To achieve this, this thesis uses a mixed approach whereby the coding analyzed the headlines that were related to the arrest of Meng. The headline coding analysis reported that CBC covering the issue had 66.64% neutral and 26.80% Pro-Western while the pro-China perspective was 6.57%.Therefore,CBC was four times more like to be anti-China than neutral when reporting about China. The practical implication of this result implies that the media has a significant impact in shaping the international relationship. When a national media misrepresents a nation when covering their news events, the people also likely to have a mislead perspective about the nation.Future studies can include an analysis of different media in the west when covering a specific issue about China to ensure the findings are more reliable and accurate. |
