| As China’s ageing process continues to accelerate, changes in family patterns are impacting on traditional ways of ageing, making it difficult to meet the growing and diverse needs of the elderly, and the problem of ageing faced by families with only one child is even more serious. As China’s elderly care system continues to improve, institutional care,as one of the important ways of elderly care, plays an irreplaceable role in reducing the pressure of social elderly care.Based on the current situation that the content of institutional elderly care services in China is imperfect and the supply of services exceeds the demand,it is important to study the institutional elderly care willingness of urban parents of only one child in China,in order to promote the development of institutional elderly care services, improve the elderly’s willingness to institutional elderly care, and thus alleviate the pressure on elderly care in China. This paper takes the willingness to institutionalise elderly care of parents of only children in urban areas in China as the research object, using methods such as literature analysis and empirical analysis, based on data from the 2018 China Geriatric Health Survey, selected variables, using SPSS software and logistic regression models,to explore the willingness to institutionalise elderly care of parents of only children in urban areas in China from factors at the individual, family and social levels, respectively. The study found that,on the whole, the willingness of urban parents of only children to institutionalise is low,and the older they are,the better their personal living situation and the longer their years of education, the greater their propensity to go to an elderly care institution;the willingness of parents of only children who are married and living with a spouse, married and not living with a spouse, divorced and widowed,in that order,to choose to institutionalise is higher, and the more restricted their lives are,the higher the willingness of parents of only children to institutionalise. The more restricted the parents were, the more likely they were to need help with bathing and the less likely they were to want to go to an institution, probably because they were less likely to want to be helped with bathing by strangers.Older people who live with their spouse or children are less likely to want to live in an institution than those who live alone, and lone parents who own their own home are less likely to want to live in an institution.Whether or not the community provides shopping is a significant factor in the willingness of older people to live in an institution, but it is possible that because the community does not provide this service in a personalised way, older people are more likely to want to live in an institution when the community provides this service.Based on the empirical results,we propose countermeasures to change the thinking of elderly people about institutional care, and to change the meaning and function of institutional care. The service aim of elderly care institutions is to focus on the needs of the elderly, through improving the quality of services, enriching and perfecting the content of services, providing diversified services according to the needs of different elderly people, including not only daily life care, medical care and rehabilitation services, but also taking care of the psychological needs of the elderly and providing humane services.Elderly care institutions should strengthen their own construction and management, supplement and improve their infrastructure, and employ professional staff to take charge of the daily operation of the institutions. At the same time, the professional quality of nursing staff should be strengthened and they should be trained and assessed so that they can tailor their services to meet the different needs of the elderly. Finally, the government should increase subsidies for various elderly care institutions, such as policy incentives and tax concessions,to encourage a variety of entities to participate in the construction of elderly care institutions and provide social welfare together. At the same time,it should also strengthen the publicity of the content of policies and other information related to institutional care,so as to promote the professionalisation and standardisation of elderly care institutions. |
