| In today’s world, peace and turmoil coexist.Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the international situation and the world’s geopolitical landscape have been reshaped. In such a context,Chinese General Secretary Xi has proposed a global security initiative, highlighting the urgency of peaceful development. With the development of global information technology, the role of communication in maintaining the international order is becoming increasingly prominent. In order to better compete for international discourse and improve its international communication capabilities, the U.S.has been continuously laying out and improving its strategic communication system,of which the media is the main and most direct way. Therefore, the major mainstream media in the U.S.have reported on the Russia-Ukraine conflict in a bid to achieve information control by the power of news and public opinion.Based on the perspectives of peace journalism theory and strategic narrative theory, this article takes the Russia-Ukraine conflict as a case study, and uses five American mainstream media,The New York Times,The Washington Post,The Wall Street Journal,The Los Angeles Times and USA Today as sample sources. The News from January 1,2022 to September 30,2022 containing the keywords "Russia-Ukraine war","Russia-Ukraine conflict" and "Russia Ukraine" were used for quantitative and qualitative analysis.Firstly, the author analyzed the overall framework of the sample based on the criteria of peace journalism and war journalism;then, quantified the frequency of each indicator and analyzed the characteristics of two frameworks respectively. The findings conclude that the U.S.media has been involved in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. It is concluded that the U.S.media used the war news frame in the coverage of the Russia-Ukraine conflict as a whole, mostly for political and military issues, while they used the peace news and neutral frame more often when covering economic and social issues. The war journalism framework is dominated by hard news, with coverage mostly originating from the elite. The U.S.media has a clear bias against Russia and Ukraine and deliberately distorts the image of other countries to achieve its own political interests. In the peace journalism framework, the U.S.media cites information from multiple countries to enrich the perspective of the story, and focuses on the life of civilians and the intangible effects of the conflict through interviews, features and other forms of soft news.By combining the different stages of strategic narratives under the two types of news frameworks,it can be seen that the news frameworks and narrative logic presented by the U.S.mainstream media are highly compatible with the U.S.government-led framework for constructing political interests and national policies. Thus,to a certain extent, the US media has become an important forum for the dissemination of US biographies.China should learn from the reaction and performance of the U.S.media in this case, and actively set issues in international events with a rhythmic and purposeful strategic narrative. In addition,Chinese media must adhere to the diplomatic concept of peaceful development, pay attention to the construction of peace journalism, and take social responsibility. |
