The Influence Of Internet Use And Environmental Literacy On Farmers’ Participation In The Improvement Of Rural Human Settlements

China’s economy has maintained sustained growth and high-quality development,and the living conditions of rural residents have been greatly improved,but the problem of rural human settlement environment remediation is still severe.Farmers’ participation is low,and it is difficult to carry out and implement the remediation work,which will lead to rural environmental pollution and deterioration of human settlement conditions,affecting the process and effect of the construction of beautiful villages.It will even affect the sustainable development of rural revitalization.Therefore,in order to promote the construction of beautiful countryside and rural revitalization,it is necessary to strengthen the cultivation of farmers’ environmental education and environmental literacy,improve their environmental remediation willingness and ability,and actively promote the implementation of rural residential environment remediation work.At present,the Internet is relatively popular in China’s rural areas,and it has a profound impact on all aspects of farmers’ life and emotions.Farmers’ environmental literacy has been improved under the publicity of Internet media in various aspects.In order to improve farmers’ participation in rural human settlement environment remediation,based on the sectional data of farmers in Hubei Province,China in 2021,the influence mechanism of Internet use and environmental literacy on farmers’ participation in rural human settlement environment remediation was analyzed from the perspectives of environmental literacy and Internet use.Sobel’s mediation effect model was used to explore the mediating effect of environmental literacy between Internet use and farmers’ participation in rural residential environment remediation.The main conclusions of this study are as follows: First,with the increase of farmers’ environmental literacy level,their willingness to participate in the renovation of rural human settlements becomes stronger,and the possibility of farmers’ willingness to participate in the renovation of rural human settlements becomes less inconsistent with their behavior.Second,the Internet penetration rate in the research area needs to be further improved.Compared with those who do not use the Internet,rural households using the Internet have stronger intention to participate in the improvement of rural residential environment,and the possibility of deviation between intention and behavior is less.The role of Internet as a bridge to convey environmental remediation information positively affects farmers’ willingness to participate in rural residential environment remediation and negatively affects their willingness and behavior deviation.When other conditions were controlled,the use of the Internet had a greater effect on farmers’ willingness to participate than the effect of Internet bridge,and also had a greater inhibition effect on farmers’ willingness and behavior deviation.Thirdly,environmental literacy plays an intermediary role between Internet use and farmers’ willingness to participate in the improvement of rural human settlements.Fourthly,the influence of Internet use and environmental literacy on farmers’ participation in rural residential environment improvement is discussed based on the classification of individual characteristics and family characteristics of farmers.The environmental literacy of male and female farmers,as well as those with or without Party members,can play a mediating role between Internet use(Internet use,Internet bridging role)and farmers’ participation in rural residential environment remediation(willingness,willingness and behavioral deviation),but their role paths are different.The policy implications of this study are as follows: First,the government should strengthen the role of the Internet in farmers’ participation in the improvement of rural residential environment.Government departments can popularize relevant knowledge and technologies to farmers through social media commonly used by them.In addition,they can display advanced technologies,equipment and products in rural residential environment improvement on network platforms and sell them through e-commerce platforms to encourage farmers to buy them.The government and social organizations can also initiate some characteristic rural residential environment improvement projects with the help of the Internet platform to attract more farmers to participate.Moreover,real-time monitoring of the rural residential environment can be conducted through the Internet,and the data can be disclosed to let farmers know the surrounding environmental conditions and encourage them to consciously participate in the remediation actions.Real-time interaction mode is adopted to communicate with farmers through social media,online questions and answers,etc.,to enhance the interactive effect.Second,pay attention to environmental publicity and education,strengthen skills training,establish incentive mechanism,improve farmers’ environmental literacy.Through various forms of publicity and education activities,pass on the correct environmental concept,improve their environmental literacy.By carrying out environmental skills training and establishing a reward mechanism for rural environmental improvement,farmers are encouraged to actively participate in actions,improve their environmental literacy,form good ecological awareness and living habits,and reduce the occurrence of environmental pollution,so as to create a beautiful countryside.
