Narratology Analysis Of Short Track Speed Skating Winter Olympics Reports In People’s Daily

Short track speed skating,as a leading event in China’s winter sports,it is characterized by dexterity,swiftness and exquisite technology,plays an important role since most of the China’s Winter Olympics medals are from this sport.People’s Daily,one of the world’s top ten newspapers with the largest circulationhas,reported on the change in China.Its recent special coverage on short track speed skating records the development and transformation of short track speed skating and other winter sports in China.People’s Daily is not only an important media for the domestic public to know about domestic and foreign affairs,but also an important channel for the outside world to know,understand and understand China.Short track speed skating won 10 gold medals,accounting for 77 percent of China’s 13 gold medals in the Winter Olympics.In this paper,the classical narratology theory will be used to analyze the special coverage of short track speed skating in Poeple’s Daily.The whole paper is divided into two parts.One is to summarize the stories reported in this special coverage,the other to conclude how to tell stories from the perspective of discourses.Stories are analyzed from events and characters,discourses analyzed from events and space,using methods of literature review,text analysis and induction.The report which appear at same time with the Olympic Games,with periodicity and continuityThere are three levels in the report,namely,the grand narrative,the middle narrative and the minor narrative,which form a multiple and coexisting narrative content system.The story part includes not just stories about athletes,but also about China’s pursuit of new breakthroughs in Winter Olympic.The periodicity of the Olympic Games makes the story periodic and shows the levels of stories.Overall,the stories demonstrate the pursuit the dream of becoming powerful nation in winter sports.The discourse part features the use of "inverted pyramid" structure and third person narration to convey more background information to readers while telling the story with the "inverted pyramid" structure widely used.In addition,there are some problems in the reports,such as less technical and tactical analysis,less in-depth reports and excessive attention to the medals.The short track speed skating report of People’s Daily tells the story of China’s short track speed skating from multiple levels,spreads sports culture,and shows the development course of China’s ice and snow sports.However,there are some problems in the news narrative,such as incomplete narrative structure,too much attention on gold medal winners,and less use of narrative skills.It is suggested that the media should establish story thinking,pay attention to discourse skills,and have an in-depth understanding of short track speed skating events when reporting sports events,as to better spread sports culture,construct social identity,show humanistic care,and help build a sports power.
