| With the increasing of obesity or overweight all over the world and the sharp increase of screen times at home during the global pandemic, the health problems caused by obesity or overweight has casued public concerns, especially among children and adolescents. These obese or overweight children are more prone to have physical and mental health problems than normal weight children and their cognitive functions are also affected. This study intends to examine and review the relationship between physical activity and cognition functions, and compare the effects of different types of physical activities and intervention time on cognitive functions among obese or overweight children. This article intends to provide scientific evidence for the implementation of health promotion projects and health education and explicate the mechanism to guide future research. This study focused on literatures that examined the effect of physical activity on the cognition functions among obese or overweight children aged from 3-18 years old.The authors systematically searched data from Pub Med,EMBASE,CINAHL,Web of Science,CENTRAL,Psyc Info,Sport Discuss, and Eric. The research was limited to RCT and published English peer-reviewed journal papers. And the searching time ranged from the establishment date of databases to February 2,2021.This paper strictly followed the data searching and extraction processes and evaluated the quality and biases of articles. Finally,Stata 16.0 was used for classic meta-analysis and network meta-analysis.This study included 12 RCT studies, there are 732 obese or overweight children in total, median sample size 68(range 54-210)people,median intervention time 16.3(range 11-36)months.Classic Meta-analysis results indicated that physical activities had no significant influences on executive function, inhibition control, attention, verbal working memory, nonverbal working memory, visual spatial ability, nonverbal memory cognitive functions among obese or overweight children. The results showed that physical activities had significant influence on general intelligence among obese or overweight children [SMD=0.1.22,95%CI=(0.47,1.98),p=0.001].According to the network meta-analysis results of different types of physical activity intervention on cognitive functions among obese or overweight children,SUCRA values showed that the effect of training camp intervention is the highest, followed by conventional physical education, physical activity combined with family intervention, aerobic training,no physical activity, sports game courses, and combination of physical activity and education.According to the results of the network meta-analysis of the effect of physical activity intervention at different times on the cognitions among obese or overweight children, the SUCRA values showed that the effect of physical activity intervention over six months is better than that fewer than six months. To sum up,this study draws the following conclusions:(1)Physical activity had different effects on distinct constructs of cognitive functions among obese or overweight children, the results indicated that physical acitivity had significant influence on general intelligence among obsess or overweight children.(2)Different types of physical activity interventions had different effects on cognitive functions among obese or overweight children. The results showed that training camp had the highest effects.(3)The intervention time of physical activity had different effects on cognitive functions among obese or overweight children. The results indicated that physical activity intervention over six months had better effect than that fewer than six months which means that properly increasing the time for physical activity is positive.(4)Reasonable choice of physical activity intervention and continuous increase of physical activity are important to improve the cognition of obese or overweight children.Relevant decision-makings should fully respect the value orientation and willingness of children and adolescents to acheive the cooperations among schools, family and society. In this way,a solid foundation could be built to push the development of the nation. The registration number of PROSPERO for this paper is CRD42021234931. |
