Between Tradition And Modernity:An Inquiry Into The Functional Changes Of The Teahouse As A Public Space

With the gradual deepening of reform and opening up,China has made outstanding achievements in its rapid development for more than 40 years.The rapid advancement of urbanization has made the construction and utilization of space become single,the differentiation of social classes has made the distance between people more and more distant,and the locality has gradually given way to modernity,but in the process of development,people’s social communication demands have been ignored,how to achieve the unity of traditional local feelings and the orderly operation of modern society,and the social public space in which various social subjects are active has become the focus of discussion.As a typical public space,how the function of the tea house has changed under the dual role of traditional decline and modern invasion,how to cope with external shocks and retain its traditional characteristics,and how it has become a carrier of local cultural inheritance and construction are the issues discussed in this article.Based on the perspective of public space,this paper takes the ancient Guanyinge Chaguan in Chengdu,Sichuan Province,which has simple,inclusive and pluralistic characteristics,borrows the research method of T(?)nnies on the traditional and modern division of community and society,through the field research method of briefly combing local history and deeply participating in the observation,focuses on the functional changes of Guanyinge Chaguan in the state of intertwining modern and traditional,and analyzes the continuation of the traditional function of the Guanyinge Chaguan and the emergence of new functions under the transition period of modern society.Through the research of this paper,it is found that in the process of experiencing the transformation of traditional society to modern society,as the continuation of the "old" function and the emergence of "new" functions in public space,the relationship between tradition and modernity is manifested as an evolution in functional dimensions.From the preservation of traditional functions such as leisure and entertainment,market transactions,information dissemination,and emotional connection to the weakening and disappearance of basic life needs services and social mediation functions,to the modern functions of cultural governance and economic promotion with the Guanyinge Chaguan as the medium,the emerging situation of old tea customers and outsiders,old space and new consumption has opened up.In addition,there is also a very close connection between the various action subjects of the Guanyinge Chaguan,and the development of the Guanyinge Chaguan has the dual characteristics of contradiction and symbiosis between tradition and modernity,showing the huge tension between tradition and modernity.When affirming the value played by the public space of the Guanyinge Chaguan,it is still necessary to pay attention to the practical dilemma of urban space being continuously eroded and squeezed.The effective creation and maintenance of public space in the future not only requires people-oriented construction orientation,but also needs to inherit and protect the existing local traditions and achieve moderate integration with the development of modern technology,so as to build the sustainable development of public space.
