In this new crown epidemic, the elderly urban empty nesters’ needs for old age are no longer satisfied with the traditional life care and spiritual comfort. In contrast, during the epidemic prevention and control process, some empty-nesters have irrational perceptions of such sudden public health events, lack scientific and effective knowledge of infectious disease prevention and self-regulation ability, and have a weakened sense of identification with the community, government and national risk management capabilities, making it difficult to maintain a normal life in the event of a sudden epidemic. Therefore, improving the awareness of urban empty-nesters about the new epidemic can help them acquire scientific and standardized knowledge of infectious disease prevention, establish a positive and optimistic attitude toward life, and enhance their sense of identity with the community, government and the state.Based on ABC theory and ecosystem theory, this paper mainly uses social work group work to intervene in the cognition of the new crown epidemic with the empty nesters in community D.The intervention is based on the cognition of four systems:micro, meso, external and macro, including the cognition of reaction and self-adaptability to the new crown epidemic, the cognition of the new crown virus infection disease, the cognition of the meaning of life, the cognition of interpersonal relationships, cognition of community, government, and state involvement in epidemic prevention and control, and cognition of emerging technology and culture. In the practice phase,a combination of emotional catharsis, gratitude exercises, event reviews, topic debates, and role plays were used, along with knowledge transfer, group activities, questionnaires and interviews to assess and verify the effectiveness of the services, and reflections to summarize experiences. The study shows that the use of social work group work can improve and enhance urban empty nesters’ awareness of the new crown epidemic and enhance their ability to cope with infectious disease epidemics. The key to improving cognition is to help the urban empty nesters create an environment and atmosphere for mutual learning, encourage the exchange of ideas, promote experience sharing, and strengthen the guidance of ideas. In addition,it is recommended that the government should strengthen the guidance of social opinion at the macro level, curb the spread of rumors, vigorously promote public health education, and ensure the quality of community education. The government should actively adopt case, group and community work methods to strengthen social advocacy and promote the awareness of urban empty nesters.
