College students’ study involution is a hot topic currently concerned by all walks of life, which means that college students blindly pursue beautiful academic performance while ignoring personal ability development in the process of study.Critical thinking ability emphasizes being cautious about opinions, hypotheses, arguments, explanations, reasoning, etc. It is a kind of rational and reflective thinking, which requires scientific, reasonable and effective questioning and reflection to seek independent judgments. So it can be considered that Critical thinking ability is a highly representative higher-order ability among students’ abilities. This research intends to focus on the dimension of student development,to explore the relationship between college students’ academic achievement and the value-added of critical thinking ability in academic achievement,to empirically reveal the phenomenon of "involution" that exists objectively in college students’ study process, and to try to understand the "involution" phenomenon of college students. The existing mechanism of the phenomenon of "involution" is explained,in order to provide experience accumulation for eliminating the phenomenon of "involution in study" of college school students in the field of education.Based on student development theory, social stratification in higher education and field theory, this paper uses the 2016 " National Assessment of Collegiate Capacities"(NACC)data to analyze from a quantitative perspective: the relationship between college students’ academic performance and the value-added of critical thinking ability,as well as the differences presented by different genders, different family endowments and different study characteristics,to verify whether there is a phenomenon of "study involution" among college students in the study process, and to analyze whether there are differences in the degree of "study involution" among different characteristic groups. The results of the empirical study show that: firstly, there is an obvious inverted "U"-shaped relationship between the growth of academic performance and the value-added of critical thinking ability, the improvement of academic performance may not necessarily lead to the development of critical thinking ability but even have an inhibitory effect, showing a “growth without development”,which verifies the obvious "involution" phenomenon in the study process of college students.Secondly,in terms of different gender samples, the phenomenon of “involution” in the study process of male college students is more obvious than that of female college students;in terms of family capital, students from the upper class of society are more “involutionary in study” than those from the middle class. The student group of the lower class of society is more obvious, and the phenomenon of "study involution" is more prominent in the student group with dominant family culture, economy and social capital;in terms of study characteristics, the "study involution" of college students at different school levels has not yet manifested. There is an obvious difference, the phenomenon of "study involution" is obvious for college students studying in liberal arts and medicine, while the phenomenon of "study involution" is not obvious between college students studying in science and engineering. Finally, this study attempts to further analyze and discuss the above research conclusions. It is found that the formation of college students’ "study involution" is closely related to many factors, such as changes in educational purposes, differences in family endowments, social resource allocation, changes in the labor market, and so on.It is concluded that the main reasons for the formation of college students’ "study involution" are: The shrinking of educational value rationality and the enlargement of educational instrumental rationality are the root causes of "study involution";the coexistence of the scarcity of high-quality resources in the educational field and the asymmetry of the job market increases the "rationality" of the existence of "study involution";"Theater effects" has spawned overloaded education, raised the threshold of college students’ competition, and made the phenomenon of college students’ "study involution" intensified.According to the research conclusions, the possible solutions to the "study involution" of college students are put forward: reshape the value of education and guide students to return to the ability standard;re-examine educational equity and promote the rational distribution of educational resources;Adjust professional settings to match the needs of the labor market better.
