Holding large-scale sports events is an important opportunity to display the city’s image and inject development vitality.Since the 21 st century, with the enhancement of my country’s comprehensive national strength and the increase in the emphasis on sports, many cities in my country have successfully held large-scale international or domestic sports events.,including the Olympic Games,Asian Games and National Games.Sports events have a profound impact on the city’s sports undertakings, cultural concepts and economic development. This paper focuses on the impact of large-scale sports events on the economic development of the host city.Firstly,it analyzes the economic growth effect, agglomeration effect, and crowding out effect of the event theoretically, and deduces the transmission mechanism of the event’s impact on economic development. On this basis, economic indicators such as newly added fixed assets, tourist arrivals, employment in culture, sports and entertainment industries are selected to descriptively analyze the change trend before and after the event,so as to preliminarily identify the economic impact of large-scale sports events. In order to make a more accurate estimate of the economic "net impact" of the event, this paper selects the economic data of 70 large and medium-sized cities in China from 2001 to 2016 as the research sample.Based on whether or not large-scale sports events have been held as the basis for dividing groups, the PSM-DID method is used to match the treatment group as much as possible with cities that have not held events but have similar economic development trends as the control group. The empirical results show that large-scale sports events have a significant positive effect on the economic development of the host city, and have passed a variety of robustness tests.Further heterogeneity test shows that the promotion effect of international events on the economic development of host cities is stronger than that of domestic events, and the promotion effect of events after 2010 is stronger than that of events before 2010.Furthermore,this paper selects the specific cases of the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and the 2017 Tianjin National Games to analyze their impact on the economic development of Guangzhou and Tianjin respectively. In terms of urban investment and consumption, infrastructure construction, industrial development and industrial structure adjustment, urban employment, etc.,the Asian Games and the National Games have played an important role in promoting. But at the same time, they have also left behind factors such as low utilization rate of facilities in the later stage, competitions, etc. After the end, there are negative problems such as the investment trough period. This article provides targeted solutions to the problems that arise.Based on theoretical and empirical analysis, this paper proposes four policy recommendations, such as actively playing the role of the government, rationally planning related events, giving full play to the effects of events, vigorously developing event-related industries, strengthening the management and protection of various industries, deepening the concept of scientific and technological innovation, and taking advantage of the situation to vigorously introduce high-end talents. |
