In the 21 st century, technologies such as big data, virtual reality and cloud computing have emerged, and it is important to develop students’ computational thinking skills in the context of the growing digital age. While there is a wealth of research on the development of computational thinking in middle and high school students, there is still room for further research on the development of computational thinking in primary school students.Game-based teaching is a novel form of teaching that can broaden the channels for cultivating students’ computational thinking. It can not only attract students’ interest and achieve the effect of teaching and learning for fun,but also make abstract computational thinking concrete and gradually improve computational thinking in the game-based sessions. Therefore, this study aims to construct a computational thinking-oriented gamification teaching model for primary school programming and to apply the gamification teaching model to primary school programming teaching in order to enhance the computational thinking of primary school students. This study uses literature research, questionnaires, interviews and quasi-experimental research methods to carry out the following work: firstly, the current status of domestic and international research on "computational thinking" and "game-based teaching" is reviewed and analysed, and the core concepts are defined.Firstly, the current status of domestic and international research on "computational thinking" and "game-based teaching" was reviewed and analysed, and the core concepts were defined, and the four major theoretical foundations of the study-"game-based teaching theory","constructivist learning theory",Dewey’s Secondly, the study investigates the current situation of computational thinking of primary school students and discusses the basis and principles of the game-based teaching model, based on which a game-based teaching model of computational thinking-oriented primary school programming is constructed. The experimental study was carried out in two fifth grade classes of a primary school in Jinan,Shandong Province,as the experimental class and the control class.Data from computational thinking scales and test questions, analysis of students’ work, and interviews were collected and collated to verify the effectiveness of the model and its impact on students’ computational thinking levels;finally, the study was summarised, reflected upon and looked forward to.Based on the completion of the above research work, this study has produced the following three research results: firstly,a gamification teaching model for computational thinking-oriented primary school programming was constructed;secondly,a gamification teaching design was carried out based on the gamification teaching model constructed in this study, and a specific gamification teaching case was developed, which can be used by frontline teachers for reference and implementation;thirdly,a practical application of the gamification teaching model was carried out to verify The final conclusions were drawn by verifying the effectiveness of the model and its impact on students’ computational thinking. The analysis of the students’ experimental data on the pre and post tests of computational thinking as well as their performance on the CTt test questions, together with the results of the students’ interviews and the analysis of some typical classroom work, show that the computational thinking-oriented gamification teaching model constructed in this study has a significant contribution to the improvement of primary school students’ computational thinking skills. In summary, this study has certain theoretical significance and practical value, and can provide experience for IT teachers who cultivate the computational thinking skills of primary school students, and help the development of their computational thinking.
