Research on the caring behavior of university teachers has been frequently studied in the context of face-to-face instruction.The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed the territory of high education such that online instruction has become an important component of college students’ learning experience.The problem of lack of care in online teaching needs to be urgently addressed so as to promote the high quality of online teaching.Therefore,this study will use surveys of undergraduate students to discover the current status and problems of university faculty caring behaviors in online learning,examine the causes of these problems,and make recommendations for improving faculty caring behaviors in online learning,to contribute to the resolution of practical problems in contemporary education and teaching,as well as to further practical applications and theoretical research on caring behaviors of teachers in higher education and online teaching.Based on Lei’s analysis framework of teachers’ caring behavior,this study compiled a questionnaire and distributed it to undergraduates with online course learning experience.Through data collection,it summarized the current situation of college teachers’ caring behavior in online teaching,and then supplementary interviews were conducted based on the questionnaire data,aiming at a comprehensive inquiry into the current situation,problems and causes of teachers’ caring behaviors in online teaching,and making an overall analysis and thinking on the improvement path of teachers’ caring behavior in online teaching.This paper mainly draws the following conclusions.(1)On the whole,the development of caring behaviors among university faculty in online teaching is well-pleasing,but there are differences across dimensions.with students’ perceptions ranked from highest to lowest for inclusive caring behavior,dutiful caring behavior,and supportive caring behavior.(2)A comparison of differences in student demographic variables revealed significant differences in perceptions of teacher caring behavior status among college students of different genders and majors,while no significant differences existed in perceptions of teacher caring behavior status among college students of different grades,achievement levels,and having had different online course learning experiences prior to the epidemic.(3)The problems existing in the caring behavior of university teachers in online teaching are as follows: First,the supportive caring behavior of teachers is not ideal,which is manifested in the unreasonable choice of online teaching platform,insufficient provision of online learning resources and insufficient attention to students;Secondly,teachers’ conscientious care behavior is not good,which is manifested in insufficient preparation for online teaching and lack of enthusiasm for online teaching.This study analyzes the reasons for the problems of college teachers’ caring behavior in online teaching from internal and external factors.The internal factors include the lack of teachers’ caring quality,the lack of students’ response to caring,and the external factors include technical obstacles and shielding,utilitarian teacher evaluation system and large class size.(4)To improve the caring behaviors of university faculty in online teaching,this study makes the following recommendations: improving the caring literacy of faculty,guiding students to perceive and respond to teachers’ caring,optimizing the construction of online teaching platform,improving teachers’ evaluation system,and promoting small-class teaching mode.
