Chemistry Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2020 Revision)and Chemistry Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 edition)both define the understanding of chemistry subject,playing an important role in students’ learning and teachers’ teaching.Understanding of chemistry is of great significance to students’ construction of knowledge network,development of chemistry thinking and evaluation of chemistry learning level.Teachers and experts can only conduct targeted teaching and research by timely understanding of students’ understanding of chemistry.Therefore,it is very important to measure students’ understanding of chemistry.First of all,based on the Curriculum Standards and literature,this paper defines students’ subject understanding as an original and structured understanding of students’ chemistry subject knowledge and thinking mode and method.Through the research on the subject understanding and the connotation of the original questions,it is found that the original questions can represent the students’ subject understanding.Secondly,taking "structure and property of matter" as an example,this paper extracts and explains the core concepts and the thinking of chemistry discipline.On this basis,it designs the original questions and forms the questionnaire.After evaluation,it is believed that the questionnaire is effective in terms of structure and content.At last,we investigated the current situation of high school students’ understanding level of chemistry in a common middle school in Shanxi Province and a key middle school in Hebei Province,and analyzed the data.We found that:(1)The understanding level of chemistry in key middle schools is higher than that in common middle schools;Boys’ subject understanding level is better than girls’;(2)The dimension of chemistry knowledge: most students have a good understanding and have several basic concepts to solve problems;Thinking dimension of chemistry:students have different thinking levels when they understand different core concepts.Different question types are different in representing students’ understanding of subjects.The thought of chemistry has more influence on the understanding of chemistry than the knowledge of chemistry.(3)On the whole,most students are at the level of association structure,that is,active level understanding.(4)Students’ ability to solve open original problems has obvious defects,which is related to their existing cognitive structure,thinking quality and problem awareness;The design of open source problem should be based on learning situation.
