| The State attaches great importance to the importance of reading outside the classroom in language teaching,and it has been incorporated into the textbook system as an important part of the teaching of language courses to primary school students.At the same time,the State has encouraged people across the country to read,and in the trend of the State’s efforts to build a learning society,people and organisations from all walks of life have increasingly begun to pay attention to the current situation of extra-curricular reading for primary school students.In particular,the Language Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition),promulgated by the State Education Department,elaborates on the importance of reading outside the classroom and sets out clear requirements on reading methods,habits and the total amount of reading.At the same time,the National Education Department has developed new clusters of learning tasks,including "practical reading and communication","literary reading and creative expression","critical reading and expression" and "whole book reading".These include "Whole Book Reading",all of which have the core aim of improving primary school students’ language reading literacy and language skills.Primary school is a critical period for developing good reading habits and skills,and improving primary school students’ reading skills outside the classroom helps to promote and popularise the use of the common national language and script,as well as to improve their cultural literacy,build cultural confidence,develop a sense of community and strengthen cohesion among the Chinese nation.Therefore,language teachers should focus on the core literacies of primary school students’ physical and mental development in accordance with the new national curriculum standards and the unified textbooks,and must be fully aware of the relevance and importance of reading outside the classroom,and consciously give full play to their leading role in developing primary school students’ reading skills outside the classroom,gradually guiding them to stimulate their motivation and interest in reading,so that they can master the ability to summarise and taste reading.The importance of reading in the classroom.The Curriculum sets out the basic requirements for primary school students to read outside the classroom.Therefore,this study will take it as the starting point,use the literature related to primary school students’ extra-curricular reading as the theoretical basis,and take the third grade students of two township primary schools in Q of Xing’an League as the research object.These problems include the following: teachers’ understanding of extra-curricular reading guidance is facing a change;the design of extra-curricular reading guidance needs to be optimised;the systematic guidance of extra-curricular reading needs to be improved;and reading responses and sharing need to be diversified.In response to these problems,the causes are analysed from both school and teacher perspectives,and recommendations are made to strengthen language teachers’ conceptions of extra-curricular reading instruction design,to highlight the role of practical guidance,to improve the systematic and scientific nature of extra-curricular language reading instruction,to increase training for language teachers regarding extra-curricular reading instruction design,and to optimise the evaluation system for extra-curricular reading. |
