With the development of the economy, people are more and more in pursuit of fashionable dressing, and young women are more and more bold in dressing naked to stand out.Dress can directly convey a variety of identity information and is a powerful tool for impression management. In particular, dress plays an important role in interpersonal attraction,so what kind of changes do barely dressed women trigger in observers’ perceptions of their interpersonal attraction? This study aims to explore this question by examining whether the degree of nudity in women’s clothing has an impact on interpersonal attraction in the context of daily activities on college campuses.Dressing nudity in this study refers to the ratio of the area of bare skin to the total body area after wearing clothes.Interpersonal attraction refers to the propensity and tendency of individuals to be emotionally close to others,to act close to others, and to evaluate each other in a positive way,and is composed of appearance attraction(attraction to appearance features),social attraction(attraction to others’ favor and liking),and task attraction(attraction by perceiving others’ "ability" and "value" attributes).Three experimental studies were conducted on female college students through contextual experimental method and test method to verify the effect of bareness of dress on their interpersonal attraction.Study 1 first used a single factor, two level(nudity: high vs.low),within-subject design to explore the impact of female college students wearing different nudity clothing on appearance, social attraction, and task attraction through a scenario-based experiment. In addition, individuals who dress naked inevitably cause others to objectify them, which in turn affects subsequent interpersonal interactions. Therefore,in Study 2,a single factor(nudity: high vs low)inter subject experimental design was used to measure the changes in the degree of objectification and interpersonal attraction caused by clothing nudity, and to continue to explore the role of objectification in the influence of clothing nudity on objectification.Considering that clothing and the body are an inseparable whole in appearance, and that the body is the carrier that gives static clothing a "living form",a two-factor inter subject design of 2(nudity: high vs.low)x2(body: thin vs.fat)was used in Study 3 to explore the regulatory role of body shape on the impact of dress nudity on interpersonal attraction through the interaction between the figure’s weight and clothing nudity. Finally, the following conclusions were obtained from the data analysis:(1)Compared with low dress nudity, high dress nudity among female college students triggered higher appearance attraction, but lower social attraction and task attraction.(2)Female college students’ dress exposure positively influenced observer objectification level, while objectifying others positively influenced appearance attraction, but negatively influenced social attraction and task attraction.(3)Female college students’ dress nudity influenced the evaluation of their interpersonal attraction through objectifying others.Objectification of others played a masking role for appearance attraction,a partially mediating role for social attraction, and a fully mediating role for task attraction.(4)Body size plays a moderating role in how female college students’ dress nudity affects interpersonal attraction. When individuals are thin, dressing high nudity increases appearance attraction compared to dressing low nudity, while fatness diminishes this positive effect;when individuals are thin, dressing high nudity decreases task attraction compared to dressing low nudity, while fatness enhances this negative effectThis study found that female college students’ dressing nakedness affects their interpersonal attraction. The results of this study expand the socio-interpersonal symbolic meaning of dress, provide a new perspective on the study of dress and interpersonal interaction, promote the application of objectification theory in the perspective of others, and enrich theoretical research on the relationship between dress and the body,as well as provide practical insights for wearers to achieve improvements in their attractiveness in different scenarios. In the future, there is still a need to improve the manipulation of dressing nudity, improve the measurement of objectification, and further explore the relationship between dressing and interpersonal attraction.
