Objective: Using middle school students as a sample,to examine the role of family function and emotional intelligence in the relationship between family rearing patterns and peer relationships, namely, whether family function plays a mediating role and whether emotional intelligence plays a regulatory role in it.Methods: Using a questionnaire survey method,1104 students from two middle schools in Baishan City completed a self-assessment of the corresponding questionnaire. The data of 996 valid samples were statistically analyzed using SPSS26.0 software and the SPSS macro program PROCESS4.0 compiled by Hayes(2013).Results:(1)There are significant differences between middle school students of different genders in the scores of trust encouragement, indulgence, and emotional warmth in the three family rearing styles, with males significantly higher than females in the scores of trust encouragement, indulgence, and emotional warmth. There are significant differences in the scores of trust and encouragement, emotional warmth, neglect, indulgence, and autocracy among middle school students of different grades in terms of family rearing patterns, family functions, and peer relationships. There are significant differences in the scores of trust and encouragement, emotional warmth, indulgence, and neglect among middle school students from different family locations. There is a significant difference between only child and non only child middle school students in the scores of spoiled parenting style. There are significant differences in the scores of trust and encouragement, emotional warmth, indulgence and neglect among students with different mother’s education levels,as well as family achievement.Students with different fathers’ education levels have significant differences in the scores of trust, encouragement, and neglect in the two parenting styles.(2)The correlation analysis shows that the five parenting styles of authoritarianism, trust and encouragement, emotional warmth, indulgence, and neglect have a significant impact on student peer relationships; The two parenting styles of autocracy and neglect have a significant negative predictive effect on family function. The higher the parenting style score, the lower the family function;Trust and encouragement, emotional warmth, and indulgence have significant positive predictive effects on family function. The higher the score of parenting style, the higher the family function.(3)Mediation analysis: Middle school students’ family functions partially mediate the impact of emotional warmth, trust and encouragement, indulgence, autocracy, and neglect on peer relationships among the five family rearing styles.(4)The emotional intelligence of middle school students can regulate the second half of the mediating effect. Conclusion: The five dimensions of family upbringing style affect peer relationships through family function, and emotional intelligence plays a regulatory role in these relationships. This finding has positive implications for improving peer relationships.
