As a burgeoning group, higher vocational college students and the undergraduates have the same psychological problems. But because the source, the education properties and the social influence factors of higher vocational college students are different from those of undergraduates, higher vocational college students also have their own psychological perplexities. In recent years mental health of higher vocational college students has been paid high attention. In order to offer scientific theoretical basis and effective guidance practice for mental health education of higher vocational college students, we need to study the mental health of higher vocational college students. A total of 751 students coming from Lianyungang Technical College and Huaihai Institute Technology were investigated. Among them 417 higher vocational college students were selected as study group and 334 undergraduates as control group. Four psychological scales (SCL-90, EMBU, Coping Style Questionnaire and EIS) were used for assessment. The data was analyzed by SPSS 11.0 for windows. The conclusions:1. The mental health of higher vocational college students is worse than that of national norm of the young and undergraduates. There are significant differences concerning the mental health of higher vocational college students with regard to gender, grade, the only child or not and living area.2. Parental rearing patterns have significant difference between higher vocational college students and undergraduates. There are significant differences concerning the parental rearing patterns of higher vocational college students with regard to gender, grade , the only child or not and living area.3. Coping style has significant difference between higher vocational college students and undergraduates. There are significant differences concerning the coping style of higher vocational college students with regard to gender, grade, the only child or not and living area.4. Emotional intelligence has significant difference between higher vocational college students and undergraduates. There is a significant difference concerning overall emotional intelligence of higher vocational college students with regard to grade. There are no significant differences concerning overall emotional intelligence of higher vocational college students with regard to gender, the only child or not and living area.5. Mental health of higher vocational college students has significant negative relation with parental warmth and understanding. It has significant positive relation with parental penalty and strictness, parental rejection and denying, parental over involvement and protection and maternal favoring subject.Mental health of higher vocational college students has significant negative relation with problem-solving, help-seeking. It has significant positive relation with self-blame, fantasy, withdrawal, rationalization.Mental health of higher vocational college students has significant negative relation with overall emotional intelligence, perception emotion, managing self-relevant emotion and managing other's emotion.Problem-solving and help-seeking have significant positive relation with parental warmth and understanding. Self-blame, fantasy and withdrawal have significant positive relation with parental penalty and strictness, parental rejection and denying, paternal over protection and maternal over involvement and protection. Self-blame and withdrawal have significant negative relation with parental warmth and understanding. Fantasy has significant negative relation with maternal warmth and understanding. Rationalization has significant negative relation with parental warmth and understanding and has significant positive relation with parental penalty and strictness, parental rejection and denying, parental over involvement and protection.Problem-solving has significant positive relation with overall emotional intelligence and four factors. Help-seeking has significant positive relation with overall emotional intelligence, managing self-relevant emotion and managing other's emotion. Self-blame has significant negative relation with overall emotional intelligence, perception emotion, managing self-relevant emotion and managing other's emotion. Fantasy has significant negative relation with managing self-relevant emotion.Parental warmth and understanding has significant positive relation with overall emotional intelligence and four factors. Paternal penalty and strictness and parental rejection and denying have significant negative relation with managing self-relevant emotion.Parental rearing patterns, coping style and emotional intelligence influence mental health directly or indirectly. Paternal over protection, fantasy, self-blame, problem-solving and managing self-relevant emotion influence mental health directly. Through self-blame, paternal over protection influences mental health indirectly. Through fantasy, paternal over protection, paternal over involvement, maternal penalty and strictness influence mental health indirectly. Through problem-solving, managing self-relevant emotion and perception emotion influence mental health indirectly. Through managing self-relevant, problem-solving influences mental health indirectly. Through managing self-relevant and problem-solving, maternal warmth and understanding influences mental health indirectly. Coping style is a key intermediary variable.
