Abstract/Summary:
With the rapid development of the socio-economic conditions, the pace of social life continues to accelerate and social competition is becoming increasingly intense. To reduce wasted time during the student’s commute, improve the efficiency of education and teaching, and enhance students’ academic performance, many urban and rural schools in counties and suburbs adopt a boarding school model to make up for deficiencies in local educational resources and teacher shortage. For boarding high school students, this learning model is beneficial in cultivating their self-care ability and independence, strengthening their awareness of groups and cooperation. However,at the same time, they face the realistic difficulties of leaving their families to study, being away from the companionship of their parents, and experiencing heavy pressure from both their daily lives and studies, which can easily lead to psychological problems such as anxiety, panic, and depression. As parents are the first teachers of their children and have a crucial impact on their lifelong development, communication between parents and children plays an important role in children’s cognition, personality, character, and social adaptability.Emotional expression,as a specific personality trait,is an important means of effective parent-child communication. This study focuses on boarding high school students as the research subjects, exploring the impact of parent-child communication and emotional expression on the psychological health of boarding high school students, and investigating the related mechanisms between emotional expression,parent-child communication, and psychological health status of boarding high school students.Based on this, educational strategies to improve the psychological health status of boarding high school students are proposed. This study mainly used a questionnaire survey method, using Amber Xin’s "Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale(PACS)",Wang Zhenhong and Guo Dejun’s "Emotion Expression Scale(BEQ)",and Wang Jisheng’s "Chinese High School Students’ Mental Health Inventory(MMHI-60)" to conduct a survey of 223 high school students from a boarding high school in Nanchong City and 264 high school students from a boarding high school in Dujiangyan City. The collected data were entered and systematically analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and Process v3.5 plugin. This study yielded the following results:Firstly,in terms of gender, female students had higher levels of emotional expression than male students, and male students were more prone to psychological imbalances than female students.Secondly, with regard to grade level, the quality of parent-child communication in terms of open communication was highest among second-year students, and first-year students were more prone to maladjustment-related psychological issues than second-year and third-year students.Thirdly,in terms of living arrangements, the score for open communication with both parents was highest among all dimensions of parent-child communication, while there was no significant difference in negative emotional expression between students living with both parents or just one.Fourthly, the overall situation of parent-child communication, emotional expression, and psychological health levels were significantly related among boarding high school students.Specifically, emotional expression and psychological health were correlated with compulsive behavior, hostility, and academic pressure.Overall,parent-child communication, emotional expression, compulsive behavior, hostility, and academic pressure were all interrelated.Fifthly,parent-child communication among boarding high school students had a negative predictive effect on psychological health and a positive predictive effect on emotional expression.Emotional expression had a positive predictive effect on compulsive behavior, hostility, and academic pressure.Sixthly, emotional expression among boarding high school students played a significant mediating role in promoting parent-child communication and compulsive behavior, while it played a partial mediating role in hostility and academic pressure.Based on the above research results, the study puts forward corresponding educational suggestions from three aspects: mental health,parent-child communication and emotional expression. It is suggested that we should pay attention to the positive value of mental health education in educational practice, help students learn to accept others, self and society, build a harmonious and warm family environment, and change the ways of parent-child communication,to improve the quality of parent-child communication, attach importance to the scientific guidance of reasonable expression of students’ emotions, and enhance students’ ability of emotion regulation and control.
