From the perspective of geography,Shrinking Cities is a complex concept across the branches of urban geography, demographic geography and economic geography within the research framework of human geography. It came out in the process of western social development in the middle and late last century. In the early stage of the phenomenon of shrinking cities, most experts and scholars believe that it only exist in areas with high urbanization level. However, with the increasingly rich research results of Shrinking Cities, people gradually realize the universality and universality of Shrinking Cities. From the 1990s to the beginning of this century,on average, one in four cities in the world is shrinking. After opening a series of relevant studies on Shrinking Cities, domestic scholars also found that the phenomenon of urban contraction in China has existed for a long time, and the high-speed social and economic growth can not cover up the ongoing urban contraction in most parts of China.Shaanxi Province is located in the inland core region of China. It is not only the economic leader in Western China, but also an important node in the Belt and Road. There are huge differences in internal development, significant duality of population mobility, and there is still much room for improvement in the process of urbanization in Shaanxi Province. This thesis takes 107 county-level administrative units in Shaanxi Province as the research object, uses the census data to identify the Shrinking Cities in Shaanxi Province, and carries out category analysis, temporal and spatial pattern and correlation analysis, coupling and coordination analysis.According to the analysis results, this thesis puts forward some suggestions on the development direction of Shrinking Cities in Shaanxi Province and even the whole province.Based on the census data of county-level administrative units in Shaanxi Province in 2000,2010 and 2020,this thesis identifies the Shrinking Cities of county-level administrative units in Shaanxi Province, and analyzes the temporal and spatial pattern, category, spatial correlation characteristics and coupling coordination characteristics of Shrinking Cities in Shaanxi Province. The study found that:(1)the number of Shrinking Cities in Shaanxi Province has increased rapidly, and the shrinking proportion has reached67.29% by 2020.It occurs not only in county-level administrative units, but also in large-scale county-level cities and even prefecture level municipal districts.(2)There are obvious differences in the number, contraction intensity and spatial distribution of Shrinking Cities in Shaanxi Province.(3)There are significant spatial correlation characteristics of resident population flow in both shrinking and non shrinking units in Shaanxi Province.Shrinking cities are mainly reflected in L-L-type and L-H-type agglomeration.(4)The urban population development and economic industrial system in Shaanxi Province is always in a slight imbalance and there is a downward trend in the coupling coordination state. The coordination level gap between contraction and non contraction units is gradually widening, and the spatial difference is obvious, mainly showing a distribution pattern of “high in the Central and low in the North and South”.After testing the coupling coordination results by using Spearman rank correlation coefficient,it is found that there is a significant correlation between the system coupling coordination degree of county-level administrative units in Shaanxi Province and the score of urban comprehensive development. Finally, this thesis puts forward the countermeasures and suggestions for Shaanxi Province to deal with urban contraction from three aspects: smart contraction, infrastructure construction and economic and industrial development, summarizes the shortcomings in the research process of this thesis, and looks forward to more breakthrough progress and localization results in the follow-up research on Shrinking Cities.
