Maize is a major food crop in China,and ensuring food security for maize has become an important strategic objective for China.Jilin Province is the largest producer of maize in China and plays a very important role in ensuring national food security.In recent years,the high intensity and overload of farming methods have reduced the productivity of the land,while the population loss in Jilin has led to a reduction in the number of farm workers,making it urgent to ensure maize food security.Improving agricultural production efficiency is of great strategic importance to promote sustainable agricultural development,increase maize production,improve farmers’ income and ensure national food security.This paper analyses the impact of conservation tillage on agricultural production efficiency through a study of 331 maize farmers in Jilin Province,and uses the stochastic frontier production function(SAF)to analyse agricultural production efficiency;the Tobit model is used to analyse the extent to which conservation tillage practices affect technical efficiency.The results of the study showed that among the conservation tillage methods,only large monopoly double rows(wide and narrow rows)were significantly and positively related to agricultural production efficiency,while deep loosening,no-till and straw return had no significant effect on agricultural production efficiency.Secondly,individual characteristics,household economic characteristics and technology acquisition characteristics also affect maize production efficiency to varying degrees.Among individual characteristics,the better the farmer’s physical health is the more effective in improving agricultural production efficiency;among household economic characteristics,the higher the proportion of maize income and labour force/labour force is,the more effective it is in improving the maize production efficiency of farmers;production and management characteristics soil quality is significantly and positively affecting agricultural production efficiency.In order to improve the technical efficiency of agricultural production and ensure national food security,this paper puts forward the following suggestions: departments at all levels and local governments should introduce corresponding policies to make up for the shortfall,vigorously promote the use of conservation tillage for farming and advocate farmers to use conservation tillage;secondly,increase propaganda input,carry out agricultural knowledge propaganda seminars in various villages,communicate with farmers up close to practically help farmers Finally,we advocate farmers to take a sustainable approach to agriculture,recognising that conservation tillage not only improves agricultural production efficiency,but also increases yields and contributes to green,efficient and sustainable agricultural development.
