The Impact Of Trade Facilitation On Export Dual Margins Of Chinese Manufacturing Enterprises

Promoting trade facilitation is the trend in the progress of international trade,and also a key question which many countries around the world concern.Trade facilitation was put forward in the Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization in 1996.In 2001,trade facilitation was incorporated in multilateral trade negotiations formally,and its importance is increasingly prominent.China’s manufacturing exports are facing severe challenges along with the more and more fierce international market competition.To accelerate the construction of a manufacturing powerhouse,it is very important to fully leverage the role of enterprises as market entities.Under this circumstance,this paper takes Chinese manufacturing enterprises as the research object,explores the effect of trade facilitation on the export dual margins of Chinese manufacturing enterprises,and further explores the heterogeneous impact of trade facilitation on different types of enterprises,aiming to provide reference for promoting trade facilitation and manufacturing enterprises’ exports in China.Firstly,this paper reviews relevant domestic and foreign literatures,and on this basis,analyzes the mechanism that how trade facilitation affects export dual margins of Chinese manufacturing enterprises,and puts forward corresponding research hypotheses.Secondly,this paper uses Chinese manufacturing enterprise trade data and provincial-level data to describe the typical facts of trade facilitation and the export dual margins of manufacturing enterprises.The paper establishes a comprehensive system,and counts up the systematic score of trade facilitation in 31 provinces of China using the principal component analysis method,then analyzes the trend of trade facilitation level in different provinces.Analysis finds that the level of trade facilitation in each province is increasing year by year,the level in China’s eastern region exceeds other regions,and the level of western regions is lowest.In addition,microscopic trade data is used to calculate the export dual margins of China’s manufacturing enterprises.The calculation results show that:from 2001 to 2015,the export dual margins of manufacturing enterprises have increased year by year,and the growth trend of the export intensive margin is more significant.Thirdly,this paper empirically tests the effect of facilitation on manufacturing enterprises’ export dual margins by using fixed effect model and Poisson regression model.The empirical test finds that the strengthening of trade facilitation has significance for the intensive margin and market extensive margin of enterprises’ exports.The test shows that if the level of trade facilitation raises 1%,the intensive margin of manufacturing enterprises’ exports will increase by 8.5%,and the extensive margin of export market will increase by 5.5%.However,the increase of trade facilitation level has a negative effect on the extensive margin of export products.Through the heterogeneity test,trade facilitation plays an active role in pushing up the intensive margin and market extensive margin of non-state-owned enterprises,medium and small enterprises,as well as enterprises located in eastern and central part of China.In addition,trade facilitation has a prominent effect on the export intensive margin growth of capital and technology intensive manufacturing enterprises,while it has no prominent effect on labor intensive enterprises.Through examining the impact of the sub indicators of trade facilitation,it is found that the impact of the sub indicators on the export of manufacturing enterprises is heterogeneous,legal environment and e-commerce have a prominent positive impact on promoting the export intensive margin of manufacturing enterprises.Finally,the paper summarizes the relevant research results,and then provides some corresponding recommendations based on the research results which mainly from the perspective of promoting coordinated development of trade facilitation in various regions,strengthening environment construction,and promoting high-tech manufacturing exports.
