| This thesis examines the impacts of rice shortages and surpluses on the economy of Liberia, with a focus on United Commodities Incorporated(UCI)as a case study. The study uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods to analyze the economic, social, and political effects of rice shortages and surpluses in Liberia.Through an analysis of existing literature, interviews with key stakeholders, and data analysis, the thesis finds that rice shortages have negative effects on food security, prices, and health outcomes in Liberia, while rice surpluses can have positive impacts on local farmers and communities. The study also highlights the role of UCI in the Liberian rice market and its efforts to address the challenges of rice shortages and surpluses.However,over-reliance on rice as a staple crop and the lack of diversification in the agricultural sector remain key challenges for long-term economic growth in Liberia. The thesis concludes by offering recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders to improve the management of rice shortages and surpluses in Liberia, with a focus on promoting sustainable rice production and distribution systems. |
