The accelerating process of economic globalization and the booming emerging Internet technology are constantly creating new growth opportunities,which also give birth to a large number of new start-ups,providing new opportunities for the sustained economic development.Due to the imperfect environment and insufficient development of Chinese enterprises,there are many difficulties and bottlenecks in the innovation and development process of latecomer firms.In this context,open innovation has become an important innovation mode for many enterprises,which is conducive to latecomer firms to quickly obtain innovation resources,forming innovation networks,improving innovation ability and realizing innovation catch-up.For latecomer firms,different open innovation modes and mechanisms will get different effects.The existing literature mostly emphasizes the importance of open innovation,but ignores the complexity and dynamics of open innovation mode,which lacks systematic discussion on the specific mode and selection mechanism of open innovation.Therefore,it is necessary to summarize the typical modes and selection mechanism of open innovation of latecomer firms.The research conclusion will help latecomer firms to choose the appropriate open innovation mode and improve the efficiency of open innovation,so as to promote the innovation driven development of enterprises and countries.Firstly,this paper combs the relevant literature on open innovation,innovation catch-up and innovation mode of latecomer firms,and discusses the innovation development process and significance of open innovation of latecomer firms in China under the background of the digital age.Secondly,based on two dimensions,this paper analyzes the diversity of open innovation modes of latecomer firms layer by layer,extracts six typical open innovation modes,and analyzes the selection mechanism of the above modes.Finally,this paper selects Xiaomi company as a typical case to explore the choice of innovation mode of case enterprises in different development stages.Through theoretical analysis and case study,this paper draws three important conclusions.(1)Compared with closed innovation,open innovation helps to enhance the innovation ability of latecomer firms in emerging markets and promote them to catch-up through interaction,integration and coordination of external factors,cross regional investment,establishment of R&D alliance and introduction of technology.(2)Open innovation models are diverse.This paper summarizes six open innovation models: inward technology,inward market,inward integration and outward technology,outward market and outward integration.Latecomer firms need to combine their own development stages,resource endowments and comparative advantages to choose their matching open innovation model.(3)The choice of open innovation mode is dynamic.This paper establishes a multi-stage decision tree for the selection of open innovation mode of latecomer firms,and summarizes that the open innovation mode of latecomer firms will gradually change from inward to outward with development,and from technology-oriented mode and market-oriented mode to platform integrated innovation mode.By systematically combing the connotation,mode and impact of open innovation on enterprises,this paper brings open innovation and innovation catch-up of latecomer firms into the same analytical framework,so as to provide theoretical support for latecomer firms to realize their development in the open innovation network.At the same time,it provides empirical evidence for the innovation and development of latecomer enterprises in emerging markets,and provides practical suggestions for improving enterprise resource allocation and innovation efficiency,thus realizing innovation-driven and high-quality development. |
