Abstract/Summary:
The uncertainty of global macroeconomic developments and the continuing impact of the Newcastle Pneumonia epidemic on the global economy have led more and more governments to think about how to quickly emerge from the recession and achieve economic recovery. In recent years, although China’s economy has achieved leapfrog development and has entered a new phase of high-quality urbanization, urban economic development still faces many uncertainties such as frequent natural disasters, shocks from major emergencies and increased financial risks, and the key to resisting such shocks lies in enhancing the economic resilience of cities. As an important region for China’s economic development, enhancing the economic resilience of cities in the Yellow River Basin is the key to promoting its high-quality economic transformation and upgrading, and the obvious differences in the economic development levels of cities in the Yellow River Basin will inevitably lead to differences in the economic resilience of cities, which is not conducive to regional synergistic development and affects the achievement of high-quality development goals. Therefore, this paper takes the prefecture-level cities in the Yellow River Basin as the research object, and adopts a comprehensive indicator method to evaluate urban economic resilience, and measures it by the entropy method.Based on the results, the spatial and temporal trends of economic resilience of cities in the Yellow River Basin are analyzed to clarify their spatial and temporal heterogeneity and to explore the driving factors that cause spatial and temporal heterogeneity. The findings of the study are as follows.(1)In terms of time evolution characteristics,at the overall level, the economic resilience of most cities in the Yellow River Basin is on an upward trend from 2005 to 2020,but there are still cities with low economic resilience. At the upstream, midstream and downstream levels, cities in the downstream region have the strongest economic resilience and are growing fastest from 2005 to 2020,while there is more room for cities in the midstream and upstream regions to improve their economic resilience. At all dimensional levels, the resilience and recovery capacity, innovation and transformation capacity all show a fluctuating upward trend from 2005 to 2020,while the adaptation and adjustment capacity show a trend of first decline and then increase.(2)In terms of spatial evolutionary characteristics,in terms of spatial distribution, cities with high economic resilience and higher economic resilience are mainly concentrated in the provincial capital and surrounding areas. In terms of spatial agglomeration, there is a significant tendency for urban economic resilience to agglomerate within the Yellow River Basin, and its agglomeration trend is increasing. In terms of spatial differences, the overall difference in economic resilience of cities in the Yellow River Basin tends to narrow, with hypervariable density being the main source of difference, but its contribution to the overall difference has decreased.(3)In terms of the drivers of spatial and temporal variation, the differences in residents’ risk resistance, government policy support and market size have played a greater role in driving the spatial and temporal variation in the economic resilience of cities in the Yellow River Basin as a whole, while differences in the degree of optimization of industrial structure and investment in scientific research are gradually increasing. For the upper, middle and lower reaches, the leading factors of spatial and temporal variation in urban economic resilience vary. The interaction of any two drivers will enhance the explanatory power of a single factor in explaining the spatial and temporal variation in urban economic resilience.Based on the above findings, this paper proposes targeted policies and recommendations at the levels of the Yellow River Basin as a whole, and the upper and middle and lower reaches respectively,in order to promote a concerted improvement in the economic resilience of cities in the Yellow River Basin.
