After China’s entry into WTO,China’s trade in goods has achieved leapfrog development. However,at present,China’s exports still have problems of low technology content and lack of core competitiveness, and imports still face serious "neck" problems. In addition, considering that the import of intermediate goods accounts for the vast majority of China’s import trade, and the import of intermediate goods mainly depends on a few countries or regions, this over-dependence on the import of intermediate inputs will cause enterprises to lose the power of independent research and innovation.Based on this practical problem, this paper focuses on the import diversification of intermediate goods and the innovation of export enterprises, which will be of great significance to answer the question of how to take into account the need for technological upgrading as a developing country while pursuing a relatively balanced trade. Therefore, this paper uses the database of Chinese industrial enterprises and the database of customs investigate the impact of the diversification of imported intermediate products on the innovation of Chinese export enterprises. The study found that the diversification of imported intermediate products promoted the innovation level of Chinese export enterprises, and the conclusion was still valid after the robustness test of expanding the sample time range, using the two-stage least squares method and Heckman two-step method. It is worth noting that the diversification of import intermediates involves the diversification of product types and the diversification of import sources. This paper makes a comprehensive investigation and comparative analysis of the specific manifestations of the diversification of import intermediates, studies its impact on the technological innovation of export enterprises, and draws the conclusion that this positive effect benefits from both the diversification of import intermediates and the diversification of sources. In addition, considering that different types of ownership, import source attributes and export destination attributes of enterprises may have different manifestations of the impact effect, relevant heterogeneity tests were conducted to reveal the differential performance of the impact of intermediate import diversification on technological innovation of Chinese export enterprises in different dimensions. Finally, through the mechanism test,it is found that the promotion of the technological innovation level of China’s export enterprises by the diversification of imports of intermediate goods is mainly achieved through the effect of intra-enterprise resource allocation, that is,the enterprise specialized production approach. The cost-saving mechanism has not played a significant role in the era of "winning by quality".In a word, this paper starts from the perspective of the diversification of imported intermediate products, and explores its impact on the innovation of China’s export enterprises, which not only provides experience for China’s enterprises to make better use of both domestic and foreign resources and markets, and achieve the rise of the industrial chain, but also provides experience for China to strive for the initiative of international circulation channels and control of the terminal market in the fierce global trade competition.
