In recent years,in order to promote sustainable economic development and reduce the pollution and damage to the ecological environment caused by economic development,China has vigorously promoted economic restructuring and thoroughly implemented the conversion of new and old driving forces.Economy and finance complement each other and are inseparable. In the process of industrial transformation, financial institutions should play an important role in resource allocation and support the development of green economy industries from the source.Based on this, the implementation of green credit policy has gradually become an important way to promote green development and protect the environment. In addition, commercial banks occupy an important special position in China, and they should bear more social responsibilities. For commercial banks, the development of green credit business has both positive and negative effects. Therefore, the study of the impact of green credit business on the operational efficiency of commercial banks has become the key to whether the green credit policy has been seriously implemented, and even whether China’s green low-carbon industry has received financial support. In order to study the impact of green credit business on the operating efficiency of commercial banks, this paper combs and summarizes the development process of green credit policy and the implementation of green credit business of commercial banks, and uses relevant theories to deeply analyze the positive and negative impact of green credit business on the operating efficiency of commercial banks and its mechanism. On this basis,18 sample commercial banks are selected as the research objects, and the technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency of each sample bank from 2011 to 2021 are calculated using the three-stage DEA model. The technical efficiency is selected as the explanatory variable, the proportion of green credit balance as the explanatory variable, the asset scale as the adjusting variable, and other factors affecting the operating efficiency of commercial banks are selected as the control variables to establish a Tobit model for empirical analysis. The empirical results show that in the regression of the overall sample commercial banks, green credit business has a positive role in promoting their operating efficiency. In the classified regression of the sample commercial banks, green credit business still has a significant positive impact on the operating efficiency of state-owned commercial banks;it has a positive effect on the operating efficiency of joint-stock commercial banks, but not significant;and it has a significant inhibitory effect on the operating efficiency of urban commercial banks;the scale of assets has significantly strengthened the role of green credit in improving operating efficiency. Finally, according to the results of empirical analysis and the problems existing in the development of green credit business, this paper puts forward policy recommendations, mainly including improving the green credit business system, establishing a green credit cooperation mechanism, and improving the green credit incentive mechanism.
