| Sheng-ma (Cimicifuga foetida L). is also called Xi-Shengma in China. Its rhizome has been used as traditional medicine recorded in the Chinese pharmacopoeia (2000 edition), but its aerial part thrown as waste. The total saponin from the aerial part showed significant activity in pharmacologic screening in human osteoblast-like cell line (HOSTE85) and Osteoblastoma cell line (UMR106). Therefore, the chemical investigation was carried out in search of new active natural products and resource utilization. From its EtOH extract, 31 compounds (131) were obtained and their structures were elucidated, of which 10 (l10) were new and named as cimifoetiside IIX and 23-O-acetylshengmanol-3-O-α-L-arabinopyranoside. By employing modern spectrometric analysis (IR, MS, 1H,13CNMR and 2D NMR-1H-1HCOSY, HMQC, HMBC, TOCSY and ROESY) and chemical methods, their structures were elucidated as I[25-O-acetylcimigenol-3-O-β-D-glc( 1→2)β-D-xylopyranoside, 1 ], II[cimigenol-3-O-β-D-glc (1→3)β-D-xylopyranoside, 2], III[cimigenol-3-O-β-D-glc(1→2)β-D-xylopyranoside,3], IV [24-O-acetylshengmanol-3-O-β-glc(1→2)β-D-xylopyranoside (23R , 24R), 4], V [cimigenol-3-O-β-D-glc (1→2)β-D-glc (1→2)β-D-xylopyranoside, 5], VI [24-O-acetylisodahurinol-3-O-β-D-gaiactopyranoside (23R,24S), 6], VII [25-anhydrocimigenol-3-O-β-D-galactopyrano-side, 7], VIII [12β-hydroxycimigenol-3-O-β-D-galactopyranoside, 8], IX [cimigenol-3-O-β-D-galactopyranoside(23R,24R), 9], and 23-O-acetylshengmanol-3-O-α-L-arabinopyranoside(10). The structure of cimigenol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (11) published in the literature has been revised.The other compounds were identified as follows by comparison data with those of references: 25-anhydrocimigenol-3-O-β-D-xylopyranoside (12), cimigenol -3-O-β-D-xylopyranoside(13),cimigenol-3-O-α-L-arabinopyranoside (14), 23-O-acetylsheng-manol-3-O-β-D-xylopyranoside (15), cimigenol-3-O-β-D-galactoglactopyranoside (16), 25-O-acerylcimigenol-3-O-β-D-xylopyranoside(17), 12β-hydroxycimigenol-3-O-β-D-xylopyranoside...
