The study includes isolation and structural elucidation of the chemicalconstituents from the rhizomes of cimicifuga foetida collected in Gansu province ofnorthwestern China, exploring the biosynthetic pathways of the novel compounds andpreliminary evaluation for bioactivities of pure compounds.By using silica column, Sephadex LH-20, ODS column, HPLC and etc,53compounds were isolation from the rhizomes of cimicifuga foetida and49compounds(1~49) were determined. By means of physico-chemical properties and spectralanalysis (NMR,MS,IR,UV,CD,X-ray crystallographic methods), structures of49pure compounds were respectively elucidated. Among them there are43cycloartane triterpenes (1~11,13~44),1alkaloid (11),3chromones(45~47),2phenols(48~49).12compounds are new, including11cycloartane triterpenoids (1~11),1indolealkaloid (12). Among them six compounds (1~6) were obtained as three pairs ofisomers featuring a7-membered9,10-seco B-ring, especially the C-3/C-10isomeric(3~6). compounds of3-OH(4,6) were encountered in Cimicifuga species for the firsttime. Cycloartane-type triterpenes are particularly considered to be the main activecomponents of Cimicifuga, the new compounds of9,10-seco cycloartane andasiaticoside type enriched the structure type of cycloartane triterpenoid. The reports ofindole alkaloids from cimicifuga are a few. A novel indole alkaloid were found fromCimicifuga foetida and showed a potential biological activity. The antitumor activities against several caner cell lines of triterpenoid andalkaloid compounds were assayed by MTT methods. Among them13compounds(8~9、11~14、16~18、20~23) with significant bioactivities were found.
