ObjectivesSince the issue of "Shanghan Lun" around 1800 years ago, there were numerous researches performed and it has been developed to an academic school of study. With the large number of domestic and foreign researchers, there are more than 3,000 kinds of books, more than 600 physicians, over 17,000 papers published. This laid the academic status of Chinese medicine.Nonetheless, there is still a worry on the heritage of "Shanghan Lun". Nowadays, elder Chinese doctors whom possess valuable clinical experience passed away gradually while the younger ones are still unable to catch up. So we must save the experience of the older generation of Chinese medicine. Since the traditional apprenticeship model is not applicable to the rapid development of modern science and technology era, integration with other disciplines will be a way out to the advancement of Chinese medicine.Professor Li Saimei always issue classical prescriptions of "Shanghan Lun" flexibly when attending patients. This topic of thesis is the usage of formal concept analysis to generate the structural partial-ordered attribute diagram to summarize the experience of Professor Li Saimei.MethodsThe structural partial-ordered attribute diagram generated from formal concept analysis method was developed by Professor Hong Wenxue of Biomedical Engineering Institute of Yanshan University. It is a new attempt to employ this approach in the study of Chinese medicine. The method is to collect medical records of patients whom had been consulted by Professor Li Saimei during the period of January 2013 to April 2014. After exercising inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total case of 293 were screened out. Two Excel tables template were prepared. The first one in name of â‘  patients-symptoms (symptom medical case summary table). The second one in name of â‘¡ patients-Recipes (Medical Record Recipe Summary Table). Input all raw data from relative medical records according to the pre-set format of table â‘  and table â‘¡. Both summary tables would be used as the basis for subsequent data analysis. According to the needs of study, both tables would be fine-tuned to develop several directional fine tables by using MATLAB program of which is loaded into Microsoft Office Excel 2007. The output diagrams would be presented with Chinese medicine knowledge in a visual readable way. This research would study the usage of "Gegen Tang" and its series by Professor Li Saimei in a macro view and a micro view. A total of 10 structural partial-ordered attribute diagrams were generated. An in-depth analysis was conducted to reflect the practice of Professor Li Saimei in using "Gegen Tang" and its series. ResultsIn a macro analysis, the diagram showed Professor Li Saimei use "Gegen Tang" or "Gegen Huangqin Huanglian Tang" frequently together with a Dangshen, Epimedium, Poria, Amomum, When using peony in her prescriptions, either peony or red peony also employed. Professor Li intends to issue combined prescriptions always. More frequently,, she combines "Mahuang Fuzi Xixin Tang" or "Xiao Chaihu Tang" with "Gegen Tang" in her prescriptions. ConclusionAnalysis of the results showed that Professor Li Saimei employed " Gegen Tang" in her treatment to patients through differentiation of symptom, furthermore, she would change it as necessary and use it in a flexible way, The study method of structural partial-ordered attribute diagram generated from formal concept analysis was able to convert raw data from Chinese medical records into meaningful knowledge and presented in a visual readable way.The experience of existing elder Chinese medicine doctor is a treasure to Chinese medicine industry. The development of Chinese medicine is facing the problem of heritage. As this new approach is an effective way to preserve knowledge, this would help in promoting Chinese medicine heritage.
