| PURPOSEAcupuncture treatment is a commonly used treatment in oriental medicine. Here we analysed the respective benefits of acupuncture and moving cupping for the treatment of the chronic fatigue syndrome.SUBJECTS AND DESIGNSixty patients composed by 46 women and 14 men,who complied with the diagnostic criteria of chronic fatigue, were divided in two control groups:Control group-acupuncture treatment(23 women and 7 men)and Experimental group-moving cupping on Dumai(23 women and 7 men). The experimental group was treated with the moving cupping approach(administered twice a week for a total of 12 sessions). The control group was treated with acupuncture(administered once or twice a week for a total of 12 sessions).A Body Classification Constitution(BCC)questionnaire and a Fatigue Self-Assessment Scale(FSAS)questionnaire were used at the pre-and post-treatment.In addition, for the experimental group,a specific analysis of the spine was also conducted.RESULTSFor all patients of both groups, there is a significant improvement of the various BCC types as well as on the components of Fatigue Self-Assessment Scale.Globally, the results concerning acupuncture seem to be better than with the use of moving cupping, even if the level of improvement with the moving cupping approach is extremely satisfactory.CONCLUSIONThese results suggest that moving cupping may be a credible alternative to treat Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for patients reluctant to undergo an acupuncture treatment, especially within Europe. This data could be used as reference data for further Chronic Fatigue Syndrome studies and research. |
