Abstract/Summary:
The theoretical work developed by Wilson and his co-workers for strip cold rolling has been refined and extended to build up a complete computer model. The new model uses a three coefficient equation to account for temperature and pressure dependence of lubricant viscosity. An efficient thermal computer model has been developed to facilitate the simulation of a rolling process. The influence of various, factors on temperature rise in dry rolling have been studied and the comparison to Jeswiet & Rice's results showed excellent agreement. Two semi-empirical equations for predicting the maximum temperature rise in dry rolling are introduced. Theoretical treatment of plastohydrodynamic lubrication in the work zone constitutes the main body of the computer model. That includes simultaneous numerical solutions of the equations governing plastic deformation, hydrodynamic lubrication and heat transfer. A good correlation was observed between the numerical predictions of strip speed and Reid & Schey's measurements. Experiments on measuring the strip speed, separating force and friction torque of strip cold rolling in the full regime have been done so as to validate the model. A remarkable agreement was found between the numerical predictions and measured values.
