Abstract/Summary:
The major purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between the Supervised Occupational Experience Scores of the vocational agriculture students in the state of Ohio and the following variables: (1) selected teacher characteristics; (2) selected teaching practices to SOE program; (3) selected characteristics of the vocational agriculture program department; (4) selected characteristics of the student; and (5) factors of student opportunity to engage in Supervised Occupational Experience program.;The research was designed to be ex post facto and correlational in nature. The target population consisted of all the vocational agriculture teachers (N = 38) and their senior students (N = 283) enrolled in vocational agriculture programs in district 7 of Ohio. Two questionnaires were used in collecting the data. The questionnaires were derived from Gibson's study in Kentucky in 1987. The instruments were adapted to Ohio and measured participation in Supervised Occupational Experience programs by vocational agriculture students. The scoring procedure for the State FFA Degree in Ohio was adopted in measuring the student's Supervised Occupational Experience.;Significant relationships were found between number of years of high school vocational agriculture completed, miles teacher lives from school and number of days extended service contract, and students' SOE scores.;Significant relationships were also found between the amount of class and/or laboratory time available for students to update recordbooks, average number of SOEP visits during the summer, supervision at fairs, and amount of time spent on teaching an introduction to SOEP and students' SOE scores.;Significant relationships were found between school farm provided for SOE program, other facilities provided for SOE program, taxonomy of teacher, program type, type of school, type of teacher preparation, number of teachers in the department and students' SOE scores.;Relationships existed among the type of career plans, years completed in vocational agriculture and students' typical grade in all their high school classes with student SOE scores.;Significant relationships were found between where the student lives and type of students' family income and students' SOE scores.
