A Restudy Of The Northern Expedition From The Perspective Of Social History,1926-1928

Taking the Northern Expedition waged by the National Government from 1926 to 1928 as the studied object,based on abundant historical materials and combining with the viewpoint and method of social history,this dissertation examines and discusses the Northern Expedition from a broader perspective.There have been a considerable number of academic achievements in the research field of the Northern Expedition.This dissertation focuses on case studies on certain topics which have received less attention in the previous research or need to be further enriched.Specifically,it includes the aspects as military expenditure raising and its relationship with local society,the construction of military logistics system,the administrative machinery planning and setup in the occupied provinces.civil-military relations connected to military style and discipline,the living state of officers and soldiers and the experience of marching.This dissertation aims to make full use of new materials or relevant materials rarely used in previous studies to reconstruct relevant history through the diversity of materials,so as to present the picture of the Northern Expedition and examine it in a more specific way.further deepening and expanding relevant studies on the history of the Northern Expedition.Based on objective and in-depth analysis and discussion on the above issues,this dissertation points out the effort of the southern revolutionary regime to raise wartime military expenditure,construct military logistics system,plan to set up administrative machinery,and the results and existing problems of these attempts.Simultaneously,it also demonstrates the impact and damage to local industrial economy,life of ordinary people and other various aspects caused by the war.Examining the cooperation,disagreement and conflict between the National Government,the Northem Expeditionary Army,relevant military or political dignitaries and the financial circle.local enterprises,public organizations,this dissertation not only presents the interaction between the revolutionaries and the local society,but also indicates the split and power struggle within the Kuomintang regime and the Northern Expeditionary Army.This dissertation makes a detailed investigation of the actual military style,military discipline and civil-military relations during the war,re-examining the implementation and effect of the political work related to doctrine and propaganda in the army.Finally,the dissertation reveals and discusses the living state and experience of ordinary officers and soldiers in wartime,through the clue of individual experience in the war period.Presenting the living state and spiritual outlook of officers and soldiers,analyzing the issues of regionalism and the nomads such as stragglers,refugees and bandits,this dissertation improves the understanding and cognition of the multiple aspects of the society during the Northern Expedition and in the wartime.
