The paper is based on the National 10th Five-year key technologies R&Dprogramme: cultural relic protecting key technology research——High and newtechnology used in the research of no-damnification exploration and tomographyapplied in ancient culture legacy. This system is an integrated system which aims atthe storage, the management and the integration analyse for detected-data that basedon the analyse and field validation, by using the GIS technology. GIS is the spacialinformation system that can obtain, manager, and analyse data, as well asdecision-making function. The technique of 3D (three-dimensional) visualization isthat it displays the information implicated by data intuitively based on visual effect.Introducing the 3D visualization technology into GIS system is the informationmanifest innovation, it can solve the limitation question that expresses thethree-dimensional spatial world by the 2D graph mark. However, in the present GISvisualization concentrates mostly in the terrain 3D visualization of superficial model,has not involved the spatial body data visualization.The paper has studied four methods to realize 3D visualization in project ,introduced the examples to contrast and analysis. It proposes the method technologyto realize 3D visualization with VTK in the exploration GIS system, has developedthe function of the GIS system. The system's realization not only expandes theapplication field of the technique which had used but also has far-reaching meaningfor archaeology, for relic protect and for the application of GIS. The paper hasObtained the main achievement and innovation as follows:1. Introducing the GIS conception into the data from the archaeology exploration.According to the system demand analysis and the general goals, the paper designs theoverall structure and system function to the archaeology exploration GIS system, andhas designed the 3D visualization function of the system in detail.2. After collecting and analyzing massive domestic and foreign materials, thepaper has conducted the systemic research and discussion to the 3D visualizationtechnology in the GIS. It has introduced four technology method to realize 3Dvisualization, and contrast them. 3. The paper has researched 3D visualization based on the visualization toolkitsVTK, and analyzed the characteristic of exploration data, presented the dataprocessing flow, and has given the concrete demonstration.The technique of 3D visualization is the direct method to display the spatialinformation. The aim is to unite a good vision effect with information. As the keytechnique of Digital Earth and GIS, the 3D visualization research of the thesis haspractical significance and applied value.
