The maritime environment is complicated and changeable, so in order to make ship navigation safe and correct, the technology of ship navigation is very important. Maritime intelligent navigation system is a system which uses many kinds of advanced technologies, such as Electronic Chart Technology, Satellite Navigation Technology, Information Technology, Artificial Intelligent Technology and System Engineering Technology to realize automatic navigation of ships at sea and vessal traffic management, it can ensure the safety and unimpeded of vessal yoyage. Nowadays, the level of research on the ship navigation technology is uprising, but referring to our country, lacking of the organizations and producers which research on this kind of technology restricts the research of our country in this field. And this research is just based on the project named"Maritime intelligent navigation system".This project can get kinds of navigation positioning information, can realize the safety information exchange between two ships or between ships and the coast. It can also have the functions, such as automatic ship identification, preventing collisions and warning, receiving and dealing with maritime safey information and weather information. After intelligently dealing with such information, it can actualize navigation information display and intelligent navigation, so that it also have the function of navigation positioning, communication, assisting navigation interface and route planning. The project is consisted by four parts, the four parts are GPS, AIS, radar and communication, and this paper focuses on the research of ship navigation which is based on GPS.The aim of this paper is to use the system of GPS to transfer positioning navigation information, to use C++and C# languages in the environment of Visual Studio 2008 to get the needed information of the ships by the communication of interfaces and to parse the positioning information, finally to position the current ship in electronic chart and to show the related information of the current ship. The paper firstly introduces the development of the GPS system, the usage of the GPS system and the basic structure of it, emphasing on the data structure of GPS message, then introduces the theory of communication of the interfaces and the dead reckoning method which are used in this design. At last it gives a simple introduction to electronic chart.Programming, after making clear the aim of this paper, is realized by two parts:the first part completes the communication of the interfaces and the resolving of GPS message by using C++langauge, at the same time, the second one realizes ship positioning navigation and information display in electronic chart user interface by using C# language. The design uses HOLUX M-215 GPS receiver to receive GPS message, connects the USB interface of the GPS receiver with the interface of the computer, uses the computer screen to act the electronic chart user interface. The simulation environment is realized by two situations:one is connecting the GPS receiver, the other is disabling the GPS equipment, only using the dead-reckoning method to simulate the voyage of the ship.
