Bad stability, which greatly affects on the whole extruding process, is the main problem of domestic plastic extrusion dies. In this paper, taking practical plastic extrusion dies as examples, the stability design of plastic extrusion dies was studied on two important areas, the flow distributed area and the functional block area.Firstly, the flow balancing problem in the flow distributed area of a domestic bad stability profile extrusion die was analyzed based on the simulation results done by software ANSYS and the flow balancing theory suggested by Levy. An improving design of this area was given, and the theoretical results of the unimproved and improved areas were examined in practical applications. Consequently, a design principle of the flow distributed area with good stability was suggested, which was further confirmed by compared with the area of an imported excellent stability die.Secondly, the flow fields of two typical functional block channels were simulated by using ANSYS. We chose a best design suitable for the manufacturing processes and keeping the rule of equal average velocity in every area at the exit of the profile extrusion die. Combining the finite element numerical analysis method with the optimizing method, the main parameters of the functional block areas were optimized. Thus, a numerical method was presented for the reasonable design of the structures of functional block areas. The conclusions and methods got in the paper are very valuable for not only improving the stability design of the dies, but also the adjustment and repairing of them.
