Most ordinary lathe design follows the usual design concept, machine tool design lacks rational basis. In the various components of machine tools, machine tool bed is a very important big part. Now lathe bed lacks effective design of rational basis;structural design bed is not enough reasonable. And CD6140 lathe is one of the mainstream lathes in the general lathe, optimizing design for this type of lathe bed is extremely important of practical value.This paper builds the three degree model based on drawing paper of this lathe-bed, using the solid building modular component in PRO/E. Model is involved to finite element analysis software, establishing finite element model. Then we do strength analysis of lathe-bed. The bed is affected by the power from bed saddle, head and bed legs. Through strength analysis, we build mechanic model of lathe bed. Utilizing the finite element analysis software Mechanica of PRO/E and ANSYS, we do analysis for CD6140 lathe bed, including structural finite element analysis and model pattern analysis.This paper uses a combination of practical experience and scientific calculation method. We analogy similar lathe-bed structure, and do structural optimization analysis based on analysis data. We present three plans on reducing weight of CD6140 lathe bed. Based on the casting process of bed, the actual lathe work condition, stiff and inherent frequency, we discuss feasibility of each plan. Based on each plan we change the structure of lathe bed and do finite element analysis. We decide to take third original plan. Based on this plan we present a more rational structural optimization design. We redesign board of lathe bed and do order optimization. After a series of design, we get reasonable structure of bed boards. Considering work condition of lath and manufacturing cost, production technique and other factors, we get the structural optimization design plan of lathe bed without reducing performance of lathe bed.Through finite element analysis and structural optimization design of CD6140 lathe bed, the weight of the lathe bed is reduced;and this saves engineering material. The bed stiff and inherent frequency of indicators have been varying degree improved. This provides more theoretical basis on the design for this type machine tools.
