Fire, a natural force of nature, has many complex relationships with the history of human civilization. Since then human civilization appears. Fire is not put the importance of the human into words. The Chinese civilization is all the time inseparable from the civilization of fire. Modern china and its history even provide more wide space for people to explore and study fire and fire apparatus. But so far there have not a lot of researches about the way of making fire and fire-related apparatus. First of all, there are not many people studying fire; only a few people still adhere to the study of fire:either based on the personal interests of a small number of people; either the experts in specific areas such as folk and history make specific research. Second, the books and the reports in this respect are scant. Most of the theme is about the universe, physics, chemistry and even medicine. Fire almost as a metaphor expresses love and hate, or the enthusiasm of political, medical and science, or other human emotions. The book really about "fire" is extremely rare.Based on this, this paper proposes the research which is about the evolution of making fire and the design of modern fire apparatus. This paper, in the first place confirms the definition of fire and some related concepts, including the interpretation of the fire in the dictionary, the fire in the encyclopedia, the connotation of fire, and the classification of fire. Second, this paper introduces the cultural evolution of fire and has a better understanding of fire culture. Specifically it is about the origin of fire in ancient Chinese legend, in the West as well as the fire and the Five Elements of Chinese culture. Furthermore, this paper focuses on a detailed description of the ancient and modern ways to make fire. It makes a study that the use of fire is gradually from open fire to dark fire, and the way to make fire is from the most primitive ignition fire to the current electronic friction fire. Nowadays, the fuel is multiple and the appearance of fire apparatus is more humanized, fashionable and functional. Finally, this paper studies the evolution of fire apparatus in design, and separately introduces the historical background of the lighter and the torch. It makes case study by ZIPPO lighter and the Chinese Olympic torch, two classic fire apparatus.
