Allergic rhinitis, frequently seen in otolaryngology clinics, plays one of the important roles in the pathogenesis and development of chronic sinusitis and nasal polyp. At present, the study of intercellular adhesion molecules and their relationship to allergic disease is now becoming a number of hot points to the academic sphere of international allergic reaction. More and more scholars have being set about to explore this area. ICAM-1 is a member of the immunoglobulin super family, its ligand-lymphocyte function-associated antigen-i is a member of the P 2?rntegrins family. One of the important features of the inflammatory process is the adhesion, transvascular epitheliuni and exudation of the leucocytes. The adhesion of the leucocytes to the endotheliocytes is the first step of the recirculating leucocytes located to the inflanunatory region. The essential molecular basis of the inflammatory course of allergic reaction is the interaction of ICAM-1ILFA-1. The combination of ICAM- 1 /LFA-1 makes T-cells adhere to the antigen-presenting cells the endotheliocytes .. the epithelial cells and various target cells, and then the mast cells ,eosinophils selectively assemble to the inflammatoin and inimunoreaction regions, initiates the occurrence and development of allergic reaction. This experiment was undertaken to clarify the relationship and its significance between the expression of ICAM-1 and LFA-1 in the turbinate mucosa and the occurrence of allergic rhinitis by detecting their expressions.. Wherefore, the paraffin sections of the mucosus membrane of the inferior turbinate collected from 20 cases of chronic hypertrophic rhinitis,24 form non-provocation period of allergic rhinitis and 20 form provocation period of allergic rhinitis were examined by using imniunohistochemical staining method with monoclonal antibodies of ICAM-l and LFA-1. The results showed that the mean number of ICAM-1 positive cells (the density of positive cells) in the turbinate mucosa of chronic hypertrophic rhinitis was 8.33±1.34,LFA-1 was 9.23±1.57; ICAM-1 was 10.15±1.44,LFA-1 was 11.04±1.51 in the non- provocation period of allergic rhinitis and ICAM-1 was 25.64 ±2.35,LFA-1 was 28.19±2.49 in the provocation period of allergic rhinitis. The expression of ICAM-1 and LFA-1 in the turbinate mucosa of,provocation period of allergic rhinitis were significantly higher (p<0.01) than-glt)se in the control groups. Conclusion: Thc high exPression of ICAM-l and LFA-l in the tUIbinate muosa ofprovocation Period of ailergic chhs and their intNon may Prtcipate in the-- PrOcess of the allergic dss and may be one of the iInPOhall factOrSin the occurrence and development of allergis bos; The continuOusly PreSenantigens and the high exPression of ICAM-l and LFAl could make the inflannnatOryceIls epeial1y the mast ce1ls' eosinoPhils in peforetal blood recndt to theinnnunreaction regions selectively, release inflbery mediators and causedamage tO the nasai mucosa, result in local pathofogical changes of exudation, edemaand so on. The findings of this StUdy suggeSted tha by chbiting or blocking theMssions of ICAM-l and LFA-1 in the tUrbinate mucosa of alleopc chhs couldPOssibly be seen an useful treatInen tO allergic chhs.
