Objective: To assess the clinlic value of immune cell infiltration in situ. To investigate the expression rate of FasL and PCNA and their correlation with immune cells infiltrated in gastric carcinoma. Method: The 39 cases of gastric carcinoma were studied by monoclone antibody CD3 and CD20 and CD68 to analyse the infiltration of anti-tumor infiltrating-lymphcytes (TIL) and tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) in situ. The expression rates of FasL and PCNA were determinated by immunohistochemistry .Result: 1) The amount of CD3+ lymphocytes infiltrated was 11.05(7.71-14.39) every visual field (×400), and 45.46(36.21-54.71) of CD68+ macrophage. The amount of CD68+ macrophage infiltrated was significantly larger than CD3+ lymphocytes (P<0.05). 2) The number of CD20+ lymphocytes infiltrated was 60(11.5-144.5) every visual field (×200), significantly smaller than the other two cells (P<0.05). 3) The expression rate of FasL was 94.9% (37/39), while the PCNA was 87.2% (34/39). 4) The cases with lower expression rate of FasL have remarkablymore CD3+ and CD20+ lymphocytes infiltration than the higher ones (P<0.05), however, the cases with lower expression rate of PCNA have significantly less infiltration of CD3+ lymphocytes (P<0.05). 5) Except for CD20+ lymphocytes, the amount of which correlated with depth of tumor invasion, there were no significant difference of TIL and TAM infiltration rate between groups of gastric carcinomas' type, tumor infiltration and lymph nodes metastasis, either there were no significant differences between gastric carcinomas' groups of age, sex, tumor size and location. Conclusion: 1) There were TIL and TAM infiltrated into gastric carcinoma, but these immune cells tend to have no effect on tumor growth. Some factor expressed by gastric carcinoma can modulate the infiltration of immune cells. The expression of FasL can suppress the infiltration of TIL in situ. The cases with a higher expression rate of PCNA concurred with more TIL infiltration. 2) The number of TIL and TAM in tumor may not be suitable to assess the gastric carcinoma's clinical and pathologic features.
