Objective: An investigation was carried out to learn the present situation and the regular rules of sex development of normal children, which provides basic data for clinical diagnosis and references for studying adolescent health. The sex development trend is also analyzed by comparing with previous investigations. Methods: 2487 students (1204 boys and 1283 girls) aging 6 to 16 years old were selected randomly from three elementary schools and three middle schools in Yantai city. Both boys and girls were measured in height, body weight and checked in pubic hair and axillary hair for different periods. The length and width of the testicls, the length and diameter of penis "were mensured for boys and the breast were checked for girls. In addition, they have been quested on emission and menarche, individually. Results: 1) The approximate ranges of testicle volume and the length and diameter of penis for boys and the age distribution of girl breast and pubic hair and axillary hair for different periods are obtained. 2) The peak of the height velocity of the children in Yantai is ahead of schedule, Compared with the results made in 1995, the age is one year ahead for boys and two years ahead for girls. 3) Compared first emission age and menarche age investigated in Yantan in 1995, boys are 0.49 years ahead and girls are 0.16 years ahead. 4) The child sex development sequence is testicle, penis, pubic hair, emission and axillary for boys. While for girls, it is breast, pubic hair, menarche and axillary. Girls' sex development happens earlier than boys'. Conclusion: l.The children's puberty in Yantai comes in advance, which can be shown from die earlier peak of the height velocity, the earlier first emission and the earlier menarche. 2. The result provide references for the clinic diagnoses of the adolescent diseases and the study of adolescent health. 3.The tendency of the earlier puberty calls for sex education in a scientific way. The schools and the parents should pay more attention to sex education and guarantee children's healthy growth by giving them psychological consultation and behavioral guide timely and properly.
