Smilax china L.(family Liliaceae),also named Jingangteng in China,was collected in "the Chinese Pharmacopoeia"(2005 version).The rhizome of S.china L.is widely used as Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)for treatment of chronic gynaecology inflammation, annexitis,and tumor disease et al.since the 1960s.Phenolic compounds have been found to be the bioactive constituents in lots of TCM with the antitumor activities.Here,the phenolic compounds from S.china L.and their antitumor bioactivities were studied.Six phenolic compounds were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of S.china L. and their structures were identified asⅠdihydrokaempferol,Ⅱresveratrol,Ⅲkaempferol-7-O-β-D-glucoside,Ⅳdihydrokaempferol-3-O-α-L-rhamnoside,V3,5,2',4'-tetrahydroxystilbene,Ⅵscirpusin A on the basis of modern spectroscopic measurements, such as LC-MS,MS,and NMR.The antitumor activities of extract A under different concentration(1μg·mL-1,10μg·mL-1, 100μg·mL-1) against SF763-1,A549-3,Hela,7402,A549-1 and HT29 cell lines were screened by MTT assay,and the highest concentration(100μg·mL-1) of extract A inhibited the growth of all the six cell lines best.The results suggested that extract A plays an important role in the antitumor activities of S.china L..The antitumor activities of extracts B,C,D,E,F against breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and MAD-MB-231) were screened by MTT assay,the IC50 values of the five extracts against MCF-7 and MAD-MB-231 were calculated at the same time.All the five extracts inhibited the growth of the breast cancer cells effectively.,and S.china L.show excellent bioactivities against breast cancer.The cytotoxicity and re-screening on the tumor cells about other phenolic constituents and crude extracts from S.china L.are carrying out now.
