In the basis of ancient literature which record Tiantai lindera root is non-toxic and broadly food therapy in Zhejiang, Tiantai lindera root pellet has been researched and produced. The toxicity and role of materials of lindera root had been determined and verified, for the future product development of lindera root as the main raw material laid the foundation.The main conclusions were as follows:Toxicity of lindera root has been evaluated. Through maximal tolerance dose (MTD) test of oral acute toxicity in rat. The doses of male and female were greater than 20g/kg. It was shown that lindera root was non-toxic and non-mutagenicity. It was also shown no mutagenicity by negative result of Ames test, rat bone marrow cell microkernal test and sperm abnormality test. After 90-day feeding test, it was not found toxicity symptom. There was no obviously affects in the rats weight, food intake, food utilization rate, hemogram, blood biochemical criterion. Simultaneously, swimming time of rat was prolonged and the lactic acid content of serum was decreased when the lindera root dosage was above 1.1 g/kg, which was proved that lindera root could alleviate physical fatigue.Lindera root pellet was produced with Tiantai Lindera Root and other materials. The ingredients were interpreted in details. The best conditions for alcohol precipitation of lindera root pellet were determined by orthogonal test: alcohol concentration 47.5%, relative density of alcohol extract 1.20g/mL(60°C), sedimentation time 48h, removal of extract impurities 22.5%, total polysaccharide 3.93g, total Saponin volume 3.89g, composite score 95.0.The best spray-drying conditions were: for every 1000 packets add accessories 2.6kg (sugar alcohols 0.8kg, dextrin 1.8kg); spray external pressure 2.2MPa, internal pressure 1.8MPa, spray flow 0.20L/min, wind temperature 55℃with yield 93.9%. The pilot production of lindera root pellet was successful.Lindera root pellet was stable after storage for 3-month at 37-40℃and relative humidity 70%-80%. It was found that the maximum tolerated doses of acute oral toxicity in rat with lindera root pellet weree greater than 20g/kg. It was shown that lindera root pellet was safe for human consumption by Ames test, bone marrow cell microkernel test and sperm abnormality test. It was also shown that no adverse effects by Lindera root pellet with rat in terms of body weight, total and weekly food utilization rate, blood biochemical criterion, the ratio of internal organs heavy and volume as well as histopathological examination after 30-day feeding test.It was proved that Lindera root pellet was alleviate physical fatigue by prolonging the swimming time and other index of rats.
