Objective To estimate the daily diet structure of the middle-aged and elderly people in rural areas by analyzing the diet diversity according to dietary diversity score (DDS), and to analyze the relationships between diet diversification and nutrition related diseases.Methods 1668 middle-aged and elaerly people (>50 years old) in a rural area of Qingdao were randomly selected as subjects. Semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire survey method (SQFFQ) and face to face investigation were used to evaluate the basic diet condition. Each subject accepted a body check and blood samples were collected for hyperglycemia and anemia analysis.Results Intakes of oil, fat, cereals and eggs were higher than common level in the investigated crowd. There was gender difference in DDS(P<0.01). The DDS score of 413 subjects (26.3%) was 5. And the score of 372 (23.7%) subjects was 6. The number of people with a DDS score more than 5 or less than 5 decreased. When the DDS was 5, the sickness rates of fatness, hypertension, hyperglycemia and anemia were the highest. And the prevalence rate rised and then reduced along with the increasing of DDS.For the investigation of living habits of the middle-aged and elderly people, most of the subjects ate on time, drinking little and ate less pork. ate fewer fried foods, drinking little carbonated drinks. But the proportion of those who persisted exercises was low and milk intake was insufficient.Conclusion The daily choice of food of the middle-aged and elderly people in the rural area of Qingdao is monotonous. The diet diversity level needs promoting. The middle-aged and elderly people in rural areas should take more milk, less oil and learn more knowledge of nutrition so as to promote their life quality.
