New words which are characterized by epochal character and nationality are the inevitable outcomes of social progress and language development. Because of the fast speed and huge amount of the creation of new words, we cannot neglect their effects on the development and communication of the world. This also determines the necessity of introducing new words into teaching activities. To develop and promote college students'autonomous learning abilities is one of the focuses in today's English teaching profession. From the standpoint of enhancing students'learning motivation, this thesis uses a questionnaire to analyze quantitatively and qualitatively the situation of autonomous learning and cognition degree in English new words of 200 freshmen from Harbin Engineering University. The findings suggest that most students'autonomous learning abilities need to be improved, and their cognition degree in English new words is on the low side. To teach English new words can enlarge students'knowledge reserve, thus arousing their interests in learning English, enhancing their learning motivation, and then promoting students'autonomous learning abilities.
