Jane Austen depicts her small world, the family gossip, human lifestyle as seemingly trivial narrative way, painting a vivid picture of life custom for us.In her novels she meticulously depicts the daily life of ordinary people and the subtle relationship among people.This dissertation analyzes social backgrounds of interpersonal communication and contact custom through interpretation of Austen's six novels, thus enjoying aesthetics and profound connotations of rational communication mode advocated by Austen.This dissertation consists of five parts along with an introduction and a conclusion.Chapter one elaborates social backgrounds of eighteenth-century England and the characters in her novels. Through the money concept at that time, contacts indispensability of individual talents and moral codes between gentry, this dissertation analyzes it in a full swing. Then in British society, people's status is affected by amount and source of money. Young people's love and marriage are restricted by economic status, which also limits the scope of dealing with people.Even a man contacting with others in society must have a certain intelligence skills to get better along with them. In order to achieve the coordination of social ties, among people's social interaction, people's behavior is required with a certain degree of moral ideals and norms.In chapter two this dissertation sorts out complicated interpersonal relationships in Austen's six novels and analyzes communication life through dinner parties, visiting friends and relatives and talking about marriage.With material wealth, many rich people frequently idle away the time in the social dinner. The charming social dance party is a wonderful place where young men and women contact is popular with them.Visiting friends and relatives becomes a common way to contact people in order to enhance the emotion, adjust their lives. Related to the young men and women as a life-long happiness, love and marriage become unparalleled event.Chapter three analyzes the rational communication mode advocated by Austen. In Austen's novels, communication custom in the representation of the description, contains deep-seated thought, showing the intrinsic connotation of rational communication. The process of dealing with people is a learning process. Austen makes us perceive behaviors, emotion and how to get along with people to achieve happiness by specific communication custom.The combination of love and money, the balance of sense and sensibility, the formation of criticism and tolerance are the elegant rational communication mode advocated by Austen.
