In recent years, the rapid development of Chinese distance learning greatly expands the space of teaching Chinese as a second language. The teachers and learners can not meet each other during the process of Chinese distance learning. In order to guarantee the quality of Chinese distance learning, teachers need to know the learner's situation very well, analyze their characteristics, using appropriate teaching strategies and learning strategies. These are problems urgently to be solved.Generally speaking, students who accept the distance education have differences much greater than the students who study Chinese at school. How to reach the basic demand of teaching and make the best results of learning within limited time to such great difference, these factors deserve to be paid attention to during the teaching design. Therefore we investigate the characteristics of foreign students from the aspects including age, sex, mother tongue background, personality, learning time, learning environment, learning base, learning motivation, learning style and anxiety. Then we introduce the universal strategies including universal teaching strategies and universal learning strategies. We design the corresponding teaching strategies and learning strategies based on the distant learners' characteristics, including age, sex, mother tongue background, personality, learning environment, learning motivation, learning style and anxiety.We analyze and compare the individualized courseware with the common courseware based on questionnaires and courseware design. Results show that (i) using individualized courseware is much more helpful for the foreign students to learnthan using the common courseware; (ii) using individualized courseware is muchmore helpful than using the common courseware for the foreign students tounderstand what they have learned; (iii) the memory achievement of using the two kinds of courseware does not have a remarkable difference.We have designed a system of diagnostic analysis on the distant learners of teaching Chinese as a second language and corresponding strategies according to the result of study of this thesis. The system includes learner's characteristics database and strategies databases. The system is made up of three major modules: student's module, teacher's module and administrator's module. Students need to log in at the first time and fill in the questionnaire. The system will return to corresponding study strategies automatically after confirming. Teachers can look over learners' characteristics, consult the corresponding teaching strategies and learning strategies, adding the teaching strategies and learning strategies after log-in. Administrators are responsible for verifying the teaching strategies and learning strategies that teachers add and maintaining the system.The thesis has been tried in analyzing distant learners' characteristics, designing corresponding teaching strategies and learning strategies.
