Now a good many scholars study the American writer Pearl S. Buck and her works from different perspectives, not only to reconfirm her achievements in the communication between eastern and western cultures, but also to penetrate into the inner world of her creations. Based on her comprehension of the status of China and its farmers, especially the women of the countryside, we aim at studying the figures in her works of Chinese subject matter. The female figures in her works differ from those by the male writers. It reflects the most important issue, which this thesis expounds and proves: the gender consciousness. In brief, her gender consciousness lies in four aspects: 1) Analyzing the female world in harmonious attitude. Pearl S. Buck endowed the women with rich intentions with the prerequisite of respecting the women's physiology traits. She reflected the wishes and desires in women's hearts instead of covering the women's backwards and showed their indomitable lives to us. 2) Stressing women's estheticism. Women in her works gain the rights to examine and appreciate men, other than being examined by men in many literal works by others. 3) Depicting the male figures in a moderate attitude. The independence of women can't be realized by means of overwhelming men; at the same time the male figures are real and appealing, which reflects her optimistic consciousness of equality between the sexes. 4) Emphasizing the women's confidence in controlling the lives of their own. From these four aspects we draw the conclusion that Pearl S. Buck had an especial standpoint in the gender consciousness.By analyzing Pearl S. Buck's novels and biographies we can understand the great American writer more. The female figures in her novels are so vivid, not just because she knew the life of the countryside or she had sympathy with Chinese women, but more importantly, the harmonious and moderate attitude in her works of Chinese subject matter.
