The thesis tries to do some textual research on the basis of tidying up the scattered materials on cognate words of the same phonetic sign in " Shou (手) " part of Shuowen in ancient Chinese books, so as to discuss the phenomenon that the phonetic signs of the pictophonetic characters can indicate the origins of the pictophonetic characters. Characters in" Shou(手)" part of Shuowen were namely the single syllable words they had recorded. We search for the cognate words of the same phonetic sign in "Shou (手)" part according to the explanations in Shuowen. If there are some words hard to find the cognate words of the same phonetic sign according to Shuowen, yet they also have another meaning can be related, then we will search according to that meaning.The thesis is composed of six chapters. The preface, Its main contents include five aspects. The first is to briefly review the history of the study of the Charcter Family of Pictophonetic Charcters. The second is to point out the studying scope and purpose. The third is to point out the studying means. The forth is to point out the studying value. The fifth is two explanation of studying. Chapter 1 , the Charcter Family of Pictophonetic Charcters that the etymological meaning is the original meaning of the phonetic sign. There are 15 batteries , 8 batteries of them are the Charcter Family of Pictophonetic Charcters indicated original meaning by add character's form, 7 batteries of them are the Charcter Family of Pictophonetic Charcters indicated original meaning by phonetic sign indirectly.
